The big guns bring big bucks at Julia’s…

Oct 1 marked the opening of grouse & woodcock season in Maine, and Lexi and I have made it the past two weekends. We’ve had little luck, though.

On the first weekend, we hit a cover in the afternoon, after I spent the AM at Poulin’s and Julia’s, checking out the guns in their fall auctions. Poulins and Julia’s hold two major firearms auctions a years — one in the spring and one in the fall. I make a point of checking them both out, if only to see some of the spectacular doubles they’re selling.

Poulin’s sale had a couple doubles that caught that interested me. This 12g, J. Funken sidelock was good quality, and the finished looked pretty original to me. But while it was a nice gun, it didn’t WOW.

12g WESTLEY RICHARDS DROP LOCK SXS SHOTGUN.

12g WESTLEY RICHARDS DROP LOCK SXS SHOTGUN.

I thought this 12g Westley Richards droplock was sleeper. The gun was rebarrelled by Westley in the 50’s, and both tubes were in as-new shape (minus some of original blueing). The stock was a little messed with, but not in a bad way. Add a Silver’s pad, and it would be good to go.

Interestingly, the patent Westley based this gun’s single trigger on was developed and filed by an American: A.E. Lard. It’s a complicated design, but Westley built them with top-quality components, construction and fittings. This made them reliable and subsequently, very popular. L.C. Smith used a similar Lard-patent for their Hunter One single triggers, but failed to apply the same quality control. That’s one reason the Hunter Ones can be such PITA.

PAIR OF CUSTOM FINISHED BROWNING B-25 OU SHOTGUNS

PAIR OF CUSTOM FINISHED BROWNING B-25 OU SHOTGUNS

Over at Julia’s, a few guns caught my eye. If I were going to the UK to shoot high pheasants, I would have bought these Browning B25s. They’re rugged, reliable, good looking, and heavy enough to suck up a day’s worth of 1 1/4oz loads. These guns hammered down for $8000 against a reserve of $12,500 — so they didn’t sell. Has they hit $12,500, they still would have been a good deal. They’re a lot of quality for the money. To see just how much, compare them to this next pair of guns.

This OU is a titanium Fabbri, a double that’s supposed to b the pinnacle of modern gunmaking. Even though this one waspretty much new and probably cost the original owner $150,000+, bidding on it topped put at $80,000 against a reserve of $100,000.

IVO FABBRI TITANIUM ACTION PINLESS SIDELOCK EJECTOR SINGLE TRIGGER OVER-UNDER GAME OR PIGEON GUN WITH CASE.

IVO FABBRI TITANIUM ACTION PINLESS SIDELOCK EJECTOR SINGLE TRIGGER OVER-UNDER GAME OR PIGEON GUN WITH CASE.

I have mixed feeling about Fabbris. To me, they’re sort of like the new James Bond movies: I want to love them, but every time I see them I’m disappointed. According to this piece in The Field, Fabbris use advanced steel and building techniques to construct their guns. While I’m glad someone in the gun trade is doing this kind of stuff, I wonder if its unnecessary. After all, we’re talking about shotguns, not fighter jets. Perazzi’s and Krieghoffs don’t use super high-tech steels and advanced construction techniques, and their guns have withstood hundred-of-thousands of rounds and won enough Olympic medals to decorate the Christmas tree in Times Square. I imagine Fabbri does it for the same reason their customers buy these OUs: Because they can.

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE.

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE.

Now for a couple doubles that didn’t disappoint. The first one was this monster 4-bore Holland & Holland double rifle which hammered down for $130,000 ($149,500 with the premium). The second was this  .577 Holland & Holland Double Rifle. It brought $115,000 with the juice.

In these two side-by-sides, you could see the evolution of the really big bore. The 4-bore was built in 1884 and at that time it was one the biggest rifles you could buy.  The .577 was from 1928. It pushed a 750 grain bullet with 90 grains of cordite — ka BOOM. Both guns were made for Indian princes. Judging by the guns’ conditions, the princes didn’t take these doubles out very much.

12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood

12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood

I love old W. & C. Scotts, especially Premiers. They’re one of the apexes of gunmaking, and in their day, they were one of the finest guns made (and extremely expensive). Scott sold a lot of them to American shooters, and most of the ones you see on the market today are hammerless models like this one, and, occasionally, bar-action hammerguns like this.

But here’s a W & C Scott Premier hammergun unlike any others I’ve ever seen. It’s a 12g Premier hammergun built on a bar-in-wood style action. A few years ago, a dealer called Mid South advertised one of these. I wonder if it’s the same gun? Actually, I hope it’s not.

12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood

12g W. & C. Scott Premier hammergun, bar in wood

On this one, some knucklehead F-up the bbls. They’re cut, and the chambers have been lengthened. Other than that, it’s a stunning shotgun, and it looks like it’s in great shape. When I first saw it, I was on the phone right away. I had 1/2 the dealer’s number punched in before I read the part about the barrels. Then I hung up. That kind of shit is a deal killer for me.

BTW: A gunsmith friend of mine told me that a lot of the English bar-in-wood shotguns he has seen came out of the same shop in Birmingham – at least in the early stages. This includes bar-in-woods with famous names like James Purdey on them.

This guns looks like the some of the Purdey bar-in-woods I’ve seen. I wonder if it originated in this same place.

CHARLES LANCASTER BEST SIDELEVER HAMMER GUN 16 GAUGE

CHARLES LANCASTER BEST SIDELEVER HAMMER GUN 16 GAUGE

Here’s a fascinating old shotgun in incredible original condition. It’s a Charles Lancaster SxS hammergun, and I’m guessing it’s from the early 1870s.

Charles Lancaster started out in the London gun trade in 1811 as a barrel maker. Soon he was known as the best in the business, and his barrels were being used by the top gunmakers of the day, including Manton and Purdey. In 1826, Charles Lancaster launched his own gunmaking business at 151 New Bond Street, London. After his death in 1847, his business was taken over by his sons: Charles William and Alfred (who left to start his own firm in 1860). Charles William Lancaster run his father’s business until his death in 1878. Henry Alfred Alexander Thorn, one of Charles William Lancaster former apprentices, purchased the business in 1879 and renamed it Charles Lancaster and Co.

Charles William Lancaster came up with a number of unique designs, including the Pillar Breech Rifle (1848), Oval Bore Rifling (1850) and the Gas Check Bullet (1851). In 1853, he came up with the Base-fire cartridge – the first true centerfire cartridge ever developed.

CHARLES LANCASTER BEST SIDELEVER HAMMER GUN 16 GAUGE

CHARLES LANCASTER BEST SIDELEVER HAMMER GUN 16 GAUGE

On the original base-fires shotguns, the barrels slide forward from the action and then dropped down when the gun opened. This guns isn’t a base fire, but it incorporates the low hammers and in-line firing pins that were two of the signatures of Lancaster’s base-fire design.

Arrieta is one of Spain’s oldest and most trusted gunmakers. For years, the 557 was their entry-level, no-frills sidelock side by side.  Ever one of these I’ve seen has been sound and well made. Bought right, they can be a lot of gun for little money. And the one you see looks like it can be bought right.

I think brand new ones go for around $6500+,  and the used ones I’ve seen with a lot of original condition are priced around $5400. So if this checks out, it’s a hell of deal at just $2,999.

Shotguns, like everything else, are subject to fads. When Parker Reproductions were introduced in 1984, 26″ barrels and single triggers were in. So today, finding them set up any other way is hard to do.

28g Parker Reproduction SxS Double Barrel Shotgun: For sale is a sweet little parker reproduction in a 28 ga. with a very rare configuration. It comes with a Beavertail forearm, Double triggers and 28″ M/F barrels. To find all three of these hard to get options all in the same gun is very unusual. The only one i have seen. It also has a beautifully figured PG stock and forearm. The gun rates at a strong 98% in its case and overall condition. Price: $5195

Here’s a decent look double coming up to auction this weekend at Milestone Auctions in Willoughby Hills, OH. The auction is Saturday November 14, @ 10:00 AM Eastern.

BTW: This shotgun is far from “Near Mint” like the sellers says. So be sure to take a closer look at the gun overall before bidding. The wood may be refinished, and even though the seller says the barrel-blue is original, it sure looks redone to me.

As I’ve written before, N. Guyot is one of the mysteries of the European gun trade. In the early to mid 1800s and into the 20th century, someone — or perhaps a family — “made” all sorts of firearms under this name: From target pistols and fancy hammerguns to high-quality sidelocks and plainer boxlocks. It appears that they had a shop in Paris for many, many decades, and for a time, an office in London.

There was also a N. Guyot who an inventor with several patents to his name and a world-class pigeon shooter who won the Monaco Grand Prix du Casino in 1901. Perhaps this was the founder of the firm, or a son who carried on the name?

N. Guyot, Paris, 12 gauge, double barrel, SxS, sideplated boxlock shotgun

N. Guyot, Paris, 12 gauge, double barrel, SxS, sideplated boxlock shotgun

As you can tell, I know very little about who N. Guyot was. But I do know that someone made some nice doubles with this name on them. Here’s one of their nicer side-by-side boxlocks. It’s coming up to auction today at Powell Auction & Realty LLC in Knoxville, TN.

From what I can see, this sideplated shotgun was made between 1887-1896. It carries a full-set of London proof marks from that period (for Black Powder, not Nitro), but no Belgian or French proof marks. This is one of the mysteries of Guyot: Why would a gunmaker with a retail shop in Paris have his a shotgun proofed in London — especially if it was made back home in France or next door in Belgium?

Condition wise, the color-case hardening on this gun looks pretty original. I’m not sure about bbl blueing and wood finish, though. Both look fresher to me, and the checkering has definitely been recut. Also, this gun has some funky looking ejectorwork on it which appears to be unique to Guyots. Wonder what it is?

LEFEVER FE 20 GAUGE SxS DOUBLE BARREL AMERICAN SHOTGUN

LEFEVER FE 20 GAUGE SxS DOUBLE BARREL AMERICAN SHOTGUN

Here’s one of the hardest classic American doubles to find. Twenty-gauges by the Lefever Arms Co. are scarcer than Republican Presidential candidates with sound economic plans.

Of all the major American shotgun makers — Parker. L.C. Smith, Ithaca, Fox — the Lefever Arms Co made the fewest guns. The total number was fewer than 74,000. And because they were built before twenty gauges became popular, very few were made in that gauge — especially in grades F & up.

With damascus barrels and a single-selective trigger, this 20g FE is very curious. My gut tells me it went back to the factory at one point,  but who knows?

HARTMANN & WEISS: AN EXCEPTIONAL 12-BORE GULLERT-ENGRAVED BOSS-TYPE SINGLE-TRIGGER ROUNDED BAR SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 2403

HARTMANN & WEISS: AN EXCEPTIONAL 12-BORE GULLERT-ENGRAVED BOSS-TYPE SINGLE-TRIGGER ROUNDED BAR SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 2403

For a while now, some of the finest British shotguns in the world have been built by two German gunmakers. Hartmann & Weiss is located in Hamburg, and their guns are on par with, and maybe better than, the finest side-by-sides and over-unders being built in the UK today.

Gerhard Harmann  & Otto Weiss learned gunmaking in Germany: In the ’50s, Otto trained in Suhl and Gerhard  trained in Hamburg. Otto Weiss furthered his education in Switzerland and England (with James Purdey & Sons), and Gerhard Hartmann went to work in Austria. In ’65 they joined together to build firearms. Today, their company builds a range of rifles as well as side-by-side and over-under shotguns.

Their over-unders are built on Boss-style actions, and their side-by-sides are built on Boss , Holland & Holland and Purdey/Beesley systems. The one you see here is one of the very few self-opening, Boss-style Round Body side-by-sides Hartmann & Weiss built. It unfired, and it’s coming up in next month in  Holt’s December 2015 Fine Modern & Antique Guns Auction.

HARTMANN & WEISS: AN EXCEPTIONAL 12-BORE GULLERT-ENGRAVED BOSS-TYPE SINGLE-TRIGGER ROUNDED BAR SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 2403

Boss & Co introduced their Round-Body style actions in 1893, and so far they’ve built around 300 of them all together. The self-opening feature was introduced in 1932 and used on a small number of SxSs up to WW2 and then phased out after in the ’50s. Finding both these features on a real Boss is tough to do, its not impossible: Here’s a real 12g Boss & Co. Round Action Self Opener.

(BTW: Vic Venters published an excellent piece about Boss & Co. self openers in the Nov/Dec, 2o15, edition of Shooting Sportsman magazine. To find out more about these super rare guns, check it out.)

Parker VHE Side by Side Shotgun ½ Frame 12 Gauge 28” Barrels Pistol Grip Stock Splinter Forearm

Parker VHE Side by Side Shotgun ½ Frame 12 Gauge 28” Barrels Pistol Grip Stock Splinter Forearm

Parker shotguns are filled with myths and mysteries:The true origins of the Czar’s Parker; the whereabouts of the three Invincibles. While some of the mysteries have been solved, others, like the “why” of the 1/2 Frame, remain.

Parker started building 1/2 guns in the fall of 1937–after the company had been sold to Remington and moved to Ilion, NY. Before the internet, a serious Parker collector would have been lucky to see one of these doubles in his lifetime. Today, thanks to a wired world, you can check out three of them.

Michael McIntosh wrote a bit about the 1/2 frame. He speculated that it was Parker’s attempt to create  a British-style, 12g gamegun (basically a 12g weighs around 6 3/4 lbs and shooting a 1 1/8oz load). In Parker Guns: The Old Reliable, fellow author Ed Muderlak disagreed and dedicated a full chapter and 10+ pages of his book to prying apart McIntosh’s thesis.

Neither proved anything. One just told better tale while the other presented a sounder argument. But at the end of Chapter 5: Circumstantial Evidence, Muderlak states the one thing we really know about these shotguns: “… nobody knows what Remington had on its corporate mind when it retooled for the half-frame in 1937.”

Auguste Francotte 12 Gauge O/U Double Barrel Shotgun

Auguste Francotte 12 Gauge O/U Double Barrel Shotgun

Auguste Francotte 12 Gauge O/U Double Barrel ShotgunThis beautifully crafted Auguste Francotte 12 gauge Over/Under has deep engraving, nicely figured wood, Greener-type cross bolt, and auto ejectors.  It would be a fine addition to the gun cabinet of shooters or collectors of O/U shotguns, as it is a great example of the origins of what has become the most popular type of doublegun. The 28” barrels have 2-3/4” chambers and are choked Improved Modified (.025) in the lower barrel and Full (.030) in the upper barrel.  The wall thickness (right/left) for the lower barrel at 9” from muzzle is .035/.033 and at the middle of the barrel is .038/.036; the upper barrel is .035/.035 and .038/.038, respectively.  Bores 9” from the breach are .729/.729.  At some point in the gun’s history, the European-style sling mounts were removed from the lower barrel and stock. The stock and forearm are fine European walnut.  The drop at the comb is 1-1/2” and at the heel 2-1/4”.  Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the wood is 14-1/4”.  The butt of the stock is checkered.  The gun locks up tight and on face; the top lever returns to the right of center.  All serial numbers, 53774, match.  The wood is refreshed and the barrels are refinished.  Price: $2,000

To quote Mr. Geoffrey Boothroyd “Few people would dispute that the most famous name in the history of British gunmaking is that of Manton”. Manton in this era called the 8, 10 & 12 bores as “Big Game” rifles; the 450, 500 & 577’s were called “Express Rifles” and the 400 & 470 as “High Velocity” rifles. Price: $39,000

This 12 gauge was made in the 1880s, and it was a medium-grade shotgun in its day. But look at the quality — from the metal-to-metal fit on the locks & action to the colors. And check out how the stock is shaped up. The checkering is nice, too. Then there’s that deep, inky blue on the triggerguard. You can almost dive into it and swim around. Not even Purdey or Hartmann & Weiss does that kind of blueing today and those guns are $125,000+.

16 gauge Miroku Side-by-Side shotgun, 28″ barrels, Mod and Cyl, 14 7/8″ LOP

Looking at doubles on Gunbroker.com is a tedious task, and most days I see the same overpriced, warmed-over junk that has been listed there for years. But every sometimes an interesting gun pops up.

Miroku is one of the largest gun makers in the world. For many years, they made Charles Daly over unders, and since 1973 they’ve made Browning’s Citori O/U shotguns as well as OUs under their own name for the UK & Euro market.

16 gauge Miroku Side-by-Side shotgun, 28″ barrels, Mod and Cyl, 14 7/8″ LOP

Miroku also made side-by-sides, including Browning’s BSS shotguns. The gun you see here is one of their early SxSs. It’s probably from the ’50s, and what makes it special is the gauge. I’ve seen a lot of 12 and 20 gauge Mirokus. But this is the very first 16 gauge Miroku I’ve come acrossIt’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends 12/19/2015 10:12:49 AM ET

These Miroku My Luck boxlocks are quality guns. They’re built on Anson & Deeley style actions, they use double and Purdey-style underbites.

16 gauge Miroku Side-by-Side shotgun, 28″ barrels, Mod and Cyl, 14 7/8″ LOP

This one has chopper-lump barrels proofed for 2 3/4″ shells and possibly choked Improved & Full. I really like the color-case hardening and the shape of the stock. It’s all really done, and I’m sure the gun is high-quality throughout.

Pittsburgh Firearms 16 ga. Anson and Deeley boxlock SxS Shotgun

Pittsburgh Firearms 16 ga. Anson and Deeley boxlock SxS Shotgun

It’s a week of firsts. Thursday, there was this 16g Miroku. Today it’s another rare 16, this one by the Pittsburgh Firearms Company.

From I dug up online, it looks like the Pittsburgh Firearms Co. was from around 1860 to the mid 1880s. Sometime towards the end of their life, they imported Westley Richards’ Anson & Deeley patent boxlock shotguns. It also appears they imported Anson & Deeley patent guns made in Birmingham by a company (or companies) licensed by Westley.

Pittsburgh Firearms 16 ga. Anson and Deeley boxlock SxS Shotgun

This one was definitely made in Birmingham, and it carries the “not for ball” proofmarks in use from 1875-1887. It also has the big, round cocking arms that are typical of the early Anson & Deeley actions. I’m almost certain the bbls are damascus, and it looks like they’ve been hotblued.

I don’t know how many of these boxlocks Pittsburgh Firearms made all together, but I bet the number is very low. I’ve only heard about 4-5 of them.

Pittsburgh Firearms 16 ga. Anson and Deeley boxlock: This is a very old side by side made by Pittsburgh Firearms. It is a 16 gauge shotgun and has 29 inch barrels and double triggers. The gun says not for ball on the gun meaning it was made around the year 1885. It has beautiful engraving .The serial number is very low-305. Weighs 6.2 lbs. locks up tight with the Anson and Deeley box lock action, shiny bores. Comb-2in Heel-3in.

Here’s a gun that gets my heart pumping.

Boss & Co made some of the finest shotguns the world has ever seen, and the one you see here is a great example of what makes them so special. If you study it closely, you’ll notice how big and bulbous the fences are. You’ll also see how the tails of the locks are more rounded, too, and the stock is super straight through the hand. Then there are the beads that runs up and around the fences. They’re quite crisp and defined.

These are all parts of Boss’s house style, and they’re the subtle differences that set these guns apart from Holland & Hollands, Purdeys, and other Best-quality doubles.

This gun also has the refinements Boss introduced into its SxSs in the mid-to-late 1920s — disc-set strikers, pins in the fences to secure the strikers — as well as the streamlined engraving pattern the company also switched to at that time. Overall, it’s a stunning side-by-side and reminder of just how nice vintage Boss & Co shotgns can be.

BTW: Santa, throw this one on my list. You know I deserve it.
