Miroku Model M SxS English Stock, DT, 28" 12ga

Miroku Model M SxS English Stock, DT, 28″ 12ga

Just in time for the coming bird season! Here are two great looking doubles that on Gunbroker.com right now. If you’re looking for a lot of quality for very little money, take your pick. You can’t go wrong with either shotgun.

The Miroku is a great double, and probably one of the best deals you’ll ever find in a quality SxS. These guns are well made, and the handle like SxS costing many times more. I’ve only seen a few with color-case hardened actions and double triggers. What a nice SXS!

The Beretta is a 686 Onyx with 28″ bbls — a tough combo to find — and one of the greatest set ups you’ll ever come across for grouse & woodcock.

Miroku Model M SxS English Stock, DT, 28″ 12gaFor sale is a Miroku Model M side by side English style shotgun. This gun was never imported to the United States, so it was likely brought home from Japan by an American GI in the 60’s. IT IS NOT A CHARLES DALY, but Gunbroker does not let you list under “Miroku”, and the gun is functionally similar to the Daly 500, using the same receiver and chopper lump barrels, but with an English stock and splinter forend. The gun is in very good shape, with minor blueing rubbing and case color loss, as pictured. No cracks in the stock, and no pitting in the metal. Bores are bright and shiny, and the action is tight, with the lever just right of center.

Browning Side by Side Sidelock 12 Gauge

UPDATE: It looks like this listing was too good to be true. On their website and on Gunsinternational.com, Cabela’s has updated the price of the gun to $4499.99.

Here’s a real nice shotgun at a great price.Starting in 1983, Browning added these sidelocks to their line of BSS, side-by-side shotguns. They’re solid, well built guns, made in Japan by Miroku.

Most of the ones you see out on the market now are priced at $3500+. This one is a grand cheaper, and even though the stock’s a bit short, it’s something you can work with at that price.

James Purdey and Sons Side-By-Side 12 Gauge

James Purdey and Sons Side-By-Side 12 Gauge

A friend of mine hates Purdeys. Even though he’s as much of a double dork as I am, he just can’t stand how people fall all over themselves for any shotgun with P-U-R-D-E-Y on the lockplate.

I get what he’s saying. I’ve seen guys foam at the mouth for tired, shot out SxSs by this maker and then dismiss a lesser known, top-quality doubles in much better condition.

But that’s the power of a name. And to be fair, Purdeys are fabulous shotguns (if they’re in nice, original condition). When you own one, you’re getting top quality, plus all the fame and mystique that comes with owning a true, best-quality, London-made SxS.

If you’re in the market for Purdey today, this is one worth considering. It looks very original, and the price is pretty reasonable.

Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game 16 Ga Straight Stock Shotgun, 28” – Made 1935 – Mod & Imp Mod – 6 Lb 7 Oz

Here is a hard Fox to find. It’s a 16g Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game gun and it’s on Gunbroker.com now. The auction ends 8/24/2015 @9:30:00 PM ET.

The Sterlingworth Skeet and Upland Game Gun was introduced in 1935. Skeet was new sport then, having been invented in 1920 by Charles Davis, a grouse hunter from Andover, MA.

In 1926, William Harnden Foster introduced Skeet to America with an article in the February issue ofNational Sportsman and Hunting and Fishing magazine. The game boomed in popularity and by the ’30s makers  offers shotguns tailored for the sport.

Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game 16 Ga Straight Stock Shotgun, 28” – Made 1935 – Mod & Imp Mod – 6 Lb 7 Oz

Fox added the Skeet & Upland Game Gun to their line in 1935 to “…meet the demand for a moderately priced skeet and upland game double gun”. They were offered in 12, 16 & 20 gauge, and with 26″ & 28″ barrels.

BTW: For a comp, here’s a nearly-new 16g with 26″ barrels that sold a couple years ago.

Fox Sterlingworth 16 Ga Straight Stock Shotgun, 28” – Made 1935 – Mod & Imp Mod – 6 Lb 7 Oz: This Fox Sterlingworth bears a Utica barrel address, was made in 1936 (SN 3726xx), has 28” barrels choked Modified and Improved Modified with 2-3/4” chambers and mid/front ivory beads, automatic safety, straight stock, extractors, 2-1/2” DAH, 1-5/8” DAC and 13-3/8” & 14-1/8 LOP. The weight is a handy 6 pounds, 7 ounces.

Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game 16 Ga Straight Stock Shotgun, 28” – Made 1935 – Mod & Imp Mod – 6 Lb 7 Oz

It retains about 65% blue with most of the thinning on the sides and a small ding in the right tube 10-1/4” from the breech that is barely visible inside. There’s also evidence of a very shallow dent on the bottom of the left tube 5” from the muzzle that seems to have been professionally removed. The bores are perfect mirrors and examination with a Hawkeye bore scope yields no indication of polishing. The frame retains 60% of original case color. The stocks are completely sound with scattered light to moderate handling marks (mostly light) and a repaired small, shallow chip on the right side of the butt plate. It is 100% on-face, lock-up is as tight as a vault (tested with the forend removed) and the top lever comes to rest well right of center. Though this gun has a short tang there are known factory examples of short tang straight stocked guns and there is absolutely no sign of it having been modified. A very nice 16 gauge that, on handling, one can immediately feel will comport itself quite well in the field.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth SxS 20ga 2 3/4", Straight Stock, Skeet & Upland Game?

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth SxS 20ga 2 3/4″, Straight Stock, Skeet & Upland Game?

I’m not sure what we’re seeing here. Is this a rare, 20 gauge A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game gun? Or is it just regular 20g Sterlingworth someone has messed with?

This gun is serial number — 270421 — which puts it around 1938. That’s near the end of the line for A.H. Fox, and three years into the period when the company was building their straight-gripped, high-stocked Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland Game guns. So there’s a chance this is one of those guns. If that’s the case, it’s a great deal.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth SxS 20ga 2 3/4", Straight Stock, Skeet & Upland Game?

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth SxS 20ga 2 3/4″, Straight Stock, Skeet & Upland Game?

But here’s the thing: The stocks on Sterly S&UGs didn’t have the checkered sidepanels — or at least none of the ones I’ve seen, and the none ones Fox advertised in their literature,  had stocks with checkered sidepanels. That detail was reserved for Foxes in B-grade and up.

So did the person who ordered this gun also ask for the panels? Did a stocker at the company add them as a way to kill the last few hours of a work week? Or was the stock a leftover intended for a higher-grade gun, and since A.H. Fox was nearing its end, the company  wanted to use it up?

Of course, the other possible answers to this riddle are a restock — maybe by Savage at a later date or by someone else — or maybe even little custom work to the wood after the gun after it was delivered (I doubt this, though). But even if one of those are the case, this side-by-side is still a nice little double.

W.W. Greener, G 60 Royal, Boxlock Model, Self-Opener, Ejector, 12 gauge, 30”  2 ¾” 99%This is the famous Facile Princeps action, designed in 1998, and touted as, pound for pound, the strongest action ever produced.  This Royal was built in 1914. Its condition is 100% original and most likely only taken out for a shoot just a couple of times, stored all these years in some fine gun rack as can be seen by its nearly mint condition. The Royal model came in both sidelock and best boxlock versions, and is described as a Best Self-acting or Unique ejector with customer-ordered engraving which could be ordered with fine scroll or deeply carved relief or game scenes (depending on customer choice), with a gold crown on the top lever.  For pairs, the gold crown was replaced with gold numbers, 1 and 2, as noted in Graham Greener’s book, The Greener Story, page 110.  This specimen is a #2 of a pair, serial number 64144, and you can see that its owner chose elegant game scenes of dogs, birds, and a rabbit surrounded by extremely fine scroll work.  True to all Royal models, the fences are arcaded and the strength of the Facile Princeps action is enhanced by its bolstered receiver. All Royals were fitted with the best wood available. Barrels are original with mirror bores.  Right bore measures .732” with .040 choke (Full) and left bore is .733” with .040 choke (Full).  Proved for 1 ¼ oz. Nitro. The automatic ejectors are well-timed, manual safety and double triggers. Price: $9,750.

The case color on the top of the receiver and tang is quite strong, while the bottom of the receiver the case color is fading some and yet there is lots of remaining color. The bores are very bright and shiny. The wood has quite a few very small superficial scratches, typically found on guns that have been hunted with but not abused. There are a couple of small dings as well. H. Mahillon, Gunmaker

H. Mahillon, Gunmaker

The Anson & Deeley boxlock is one of the most successful shotgun actions of all time. Invented in 1875 by Westley Richards, the design has been the basis for millions of shotguns, including the one you see here.

H. Mahillon was a Belgian maker with a shop is Brussels. They “made” a wide range of guns: From bolt rifles to best-quality sidelock pigeon guns. I say “made” because I’m not sure if the company built its own guns or had them made in the trade by other craftsmen. Regardless of who actually did the making, every Mahillon I’ve seen has been very well built.

I’m sure the one you see here is, too. If you’re looking for a great little bird gun at a fantastic price, this is it. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends tomorrow, 9/11/2015, @ 4:30:26 PM ET.

H. Mahillon 20g SxS Double Barrel Shotgun

H. Mahillon 20g SxS Double Barrel Shotgun: Up for bid is a lovely looking, lightly used H Mahillon SxS side plated boxlock ejectorgun shotgun chambered in 20 gauge. Barrels are 26 3/4″ with excellent, bright strong bores with a single bead at the muzzle and matted rib. Metal surfaces are blued and coin finished. I believe the barrels have been professionally reblued and currently retain about 95% of this finish with some scattered marks, scratches and small dings. Receiver is coin finished and it and the lever, sideplated boxlocks, triggerguard, tangs, and screw heads show tasteful engraving; please see the multiple closeup photos. Straight grip English style stock and splinter forend are nicely checkered. Shotgun features a checkered wooden butt and side clips where the receiver and breech end of the barrels meet. LOP is 12 3/4″ and 13 3/4″ with drops at comb and heel of 1 1/2″ and 2 3/16″ respectively. Shotgun weighs in at 5 lb 12 oz. European swivels are at the stock and bottom rib of the barrels. Charles Daly German 12 Ga Feather Weight Double-Barrel Shotgun

Charles Daly German 12 Ga Feather Weight Double-Barrel Shotgun

In 1884, Westley Richard invented the Anson & Deeley boxlock. Even though Westley revised their design into the 20 century, many collectors believe the companies who really perfected it were Francotte, and  in Prussia, H.A. Lindner. Most of Lindner’s A&D boxlock shotguns were imported into this country by Charles Daly.

Charles Daly was a businessman. Around 1875 he partnered with August Shoverling to import shotguns into the United States. These side-by-sides were marketed under the Charles Daly name, and early on they were built by serveral different makers.

By the time this gun was built, Daly had established his relationship with Lindner. The Lindner-Daly relationship lasted from the end of the 19th century until around WW1, and produced some of the finest boxlock shotguns ever built.

This shotgun is coming up tomorrow at Echoes of Glory International Military Auction House. It’s a hard-to-find Feather Weight model. Even though it looks like it has a few issue, it could be a very nice SxS.

Charles Daly German 12 Ga Feather Weight Double-Barrel Shotgun: A circa 1895-1910 breech-loading smokeless powder Daly German Double-Barrel Shotgun in good to very good condition. Finely-engraved case-hardened receiver, fluid-steel featherweight barrels, nice burl-walnut stocks and sling-swivels. At one point, it was fitted with a Pachmayr recoil pad. Some very light rust-pitting, overall a beautiful shotgun, full chokes and near new bores. Barrel release does not snapback.

Rare Ansley H. Fox “A Grade” 16 ga. SxS shotgun

Rare Ansley H. Fox “A Grade” 16 ga. SxS shotgunWe have for auction a nice clean Ansley H. Fox of Philadelphia PA. “A Grade” Double Barrel Side X Side Shotgun, chambered for 16 gauge shot shell cartridges. This beautiful vintage shotgun bearing serial number 300236 was manufactured in 1913 the second year of production for 16 gauge Ansley H. Fox of Philadelphia models according to published factory records. The serial numbers in our auction photographs have been digitally removed, however we will gladly provide them to the winning bidder upon request at the completion of the auction. This beautiful vintage example has remained in wonderful factory original condition over the past 102 years, still retaining most of the original factory blued barrel finish, and showing areas of the factory applied case colored frame finish still is visible. Bores and function are excellent.

Rare Ansley H. Fox "A Grade" 16 ga. SxS shotgun

Rare Ansley H. Fox “A Grade” 16 ga. SxS shotgun

This is an early Ansley H. Fox of Philadelphia Pa, and is not to be confused with the later Fox shotgun variations. The shotgun in our auction listing is an “A Grade” Model, with very nice factory engraving. Early graded A. H. Fox model shotguns are very rare, and seldom encountered, especially ones that are still retaining nice clean factory original condition, with no after market modifications, or have been refinished like the one in our auction.

Rare Ansley H. Fox "A Grade" 16 ga. SxS shotgun

Rare Ansley H. Fox “A Grade” 16 ga. SxS shotgun

The 26 inch side X side “Krupp Fluid Steel” barrels were factory designed with a full length sighting rib, extractors, are choked Full on the right, and Modified on the left, and still have nice bright bores & chambers. This early vintage double barrel shotgun still has the factory original early style 16 gauge 2 9/16 inch shot shell chambering, and has “not” been rechambered as many have, to accommodate the more modern 2 ¾ inch shells. The locking leaver still rests firmly to the right as it should, the action is still very tight, and the barrel to action fit is solid with no looseness. Again folks, please keep in mind that this beautiful vintage A. H. Fox is all factory original with no modifications, which in todays market is a very Rare find! This beauty still retains the factory original genuine Walnut wood stock & forearm, which has very nice factory checkering, with no cracks, chips, or alterations.

Rare Ansley H. Fox "A Grade" 16 ga. SxS shotgun

Rare Ansley H. Fox “A Grade” 16 ga. SxS shotgun

This nice old A. H. Fox shotgun has the following stock measurements, the LOP (Length of Pull) is 14 ¼ inches, and is fitted with the original black bake-a-lite butt plate. No folks, you didn’t read it wrong,,, this grand old shotgun has not been cut! The drop at the comb is 2 ¼ inches, is 3 inches at the butt, and has no cast off, and the shotgun weighs a total of just 6 1/4 lbs. This is simply an exceptional 102 year old example of a very nice, very clean, unaltered, factory original A. H. Fox of Philadelphia Pa. shotgun. This beauty would certainly make a great addition to any Ansley H. Fox, or any other fine vintage gun collection.

RARE EARLY HOLLAND & HOLLAND ROYAL HAMMERLESS SIDELOCK TOP-LEVER DOUBLE RIFLE

RARE EARLY HOLLAND & HOLLAND ROYAL HAMMERLESS SIDELOCK TOP-LEVER DOUBLE RIFLE

The Holland & Holland Royal is one of the most iconic doubles every made. Introduced in 1885, the Royal’s design was based on a 1883 patent filed by Henry Holland and John Robertson. Throughout the 1880s, the Royal’s look & design was tweaked and refined until it evolved into the kind of gun we see here.

This Royal, coming up in James D. Julia’s Fall sale, was finished in 1894. At that time, the shooting world was transitioning from black powders to smokeless powders, and rifle makers were starting to introduced new “nitro express” loads to replace their black-powder express (BPE) cartridges.

The .450 BPE  3 1/4″ was one of the most popular cartridges of the black-powder era, and today it’s still a great round for anything you can hunt in North America. Because the 450BPE generates far less energy than the .450 Nitro Express, guns made for .450 BPE tend to be on the light side for double rifles. They ‘re also tend to be much more comfortable to shoot.

RARE EARLY HOLLAND & HOLLAND ROYAL HAMMERLESS SIDELOCK TOP-LEVER DOUBLE RIFLE

CONDITION: Very fine, original, as found. Bbls retain approx 60% orig blue, thinning overall, with some minor flecking. Action retains 50 – 60% orig case hardening color, strong where protected. Locks retain 60 – 70% orig color, right lock somewhat stronger. Top lever retains 80 – 90% of its orig blue, silvered on thumbpiece. Trigger guard retains perhaps 30% of its blue on bow, grip completely silvered. All engraving remains sharp and clear, no noted pitting. Stocks retain most of their fine orig hand rubbed oil finish, with some light marks and scratches, checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent with bright sharp rifling throughout. A bit of looseness can be felt in action with forend removed, feels tight with forend in place. Bbls are very slightly off face. Case leather is darkening and has many light marks and scuffs. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is fine, with a bit of insect damage, and some blocks and partitions loose, with the butt block replaced and lined in green cloth. An exceptionally fine, elegant and rare, early top-lever Holland Royal rifle in a caliber suitable for almost any game with proper loads and bullets. Estimate: $27,500-$37,500
