W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle

W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle

W. & C. Scott used to one of the UK’s biggest — and greatest — gunmakers. Founded in 1832 by brothers William and Charles Scott, it joined with P. Webley in 1897 to create Webley & Scott, and they retained the name W. & C. Scott for use on their finest firearms.

Up into the 20th century, W. & C. Scott and then Webley & Scott built thousands and thousands of shotguns in all sorts of grades and configurations. What they didn’t build a lot of were double rifles — or at least ones bearing the Webley & Scott or W. & C. Scott name.

W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle

W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle

So the one you see here is a pretty rare double. It looks like it’s an upper-middle grade sidelock made on a Rogers-patent action. When it was built, it was probably a couple steps down from Scott’s top gun: The Imperial Premier.

W. & C. Scott 30.06 Sidelock SxS Double Rifle: Double rifle family owed for three generation, unfired for the last fifty years. May be a one of the kind, made for America. Very Beautiful weapon Engraved in Excellant condition. Appears to be in unfired condition, no scratches. Price: $12,995

20 gauge Savage-Fox Sterlingworth SXS shotgun, 28" barrels

20 gauge Savage-Fox Sterlingworth SXS shotgun, 28″ barrels

Stone walls. Grown-over apple orchards. English setters.

If you’re a sucker for all the trappings of traditional grouse hunting, you’ll probably like the classic American shotguns posted here.

I’ve called the Fox Sterlingworth the gateway drug of doubles. It has been the first side-by-side for a lot of guys (including me), and it has initiated a passion that has taken over many a life.

This Sterlingworth caught my eye because it’s a 20g with 28″ and super shootable stock dimensions. It’s also priced very fairly.

16 gauge Ithaca NID Side-by-Side Shotgun

16 gauge Ithaca NID Side-by-Side Shotgun

Ithaca was one America’s most successful gunmakers, and NID was the final incarnation of their SxSs. These guns are basic and tough– like old-school F150s with crank windows and bench seats. This 16g NID is on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends tomorrow, 12/23, @ 8:26:50 AM ET.

Ithaca NID Star Model 16 GA: Up for sale we have a beautiful NID 16 guage, 28″barrels choked M/F, all serial numbers match. This gun was made in 1929, 2 3/4″ chambers and shoots well, the gun is very solid and locks up tight. There is one deep scratch on the forearm, other then that the wood is really nice. The barrels and bores are excellent.

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

I love the American guns, but I hate the prices you have to pay for good ones. On most Parkers, Foxes, L.C. Smiths — especially the higher grades — you’re paying more for a name and its sentimental connections than you are for true quality.

But when you buy Belgian and French doubles, different dynamics come into play. You can pay relatively little money and get a gun that’s extremely well made. That’s the case with this Gastinne Renette. It’s a fantastic double, very high quality, and it looks like it’s in incredible original condition.

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

Gastinne Renette is one of Europe’s most famous gunmakers. They started building guns in the early-to-mid 1800s, and their clients included all sorts of aristocrats and noble types, including Napoleon III. I think they still had a retail shop in Paris up into the 1970s.

This Gastinne is an Anson & Deeley pattern boxlock with ejectors. It looks like it was built in Belgium, probably before WW2, and then retailed in Paris by the “maker”. This was a pretty common practice for a lot of the Parisian gunmakers, and for a lot of the “makers” throughout Europe.

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun

12g Gastinne Renette, Paris, Side-by-Side Shotgun: A 12 ga shotgun chambered for 2-1/2″ shells. A very classic looking European shotgun with a straight grip stock. Very thin in the wrist area. Very tight engraving on the frame. Heavy deep relief engraved bolsters. The frame has most case color remaining. Typical of European style, the inset panel is in blue as is the trigger guard. Extensive high quality engraving with the classical long pointed lower tang. Bbl blue very nice also. Wood is good overall cond with typical hunting mars and dings. The buttplate on this is not separate but instead sculpted into the stock. Letters in gold are “J L F” towards the heal of the stock. A fine looking shotgun that would make a dandy hunting gun. Price: $ 2,100

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

In a the world of fine shotguns, “Best-gun” seems like a phrase with a pretty obvious definition: The very best shotgun a manufacturer can make. But because these were hand made by different people at different time periods, each one is a bit different. That means some bests are best-er than others.

Ogden Smiths used to be a fishing tackle company in London. In 1923, Walter Sydney Ogden Smith of the Ogden Smith family joined with the gunmaker Henry H. Hussey (son of gunmaker H.J. Hussey’s) to sell guns under the name Ogden Smiths & Hussey, Limited. This partnership lasted until 1933 and produced shotguns and rifles of different styles and qualities, including single-barrel trap guns like this and the best-quality, SxS, Imperial you see here.

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

The Hussey family Imperial grade sidelock shotguns since old man H.J. started his own operations after being fired from Lang & Hussey in 1898 (in fact, Lang & Hussey’s finest gun was also called the Imperial). Today, these Imperials pop up on the market on a regular basis. They’re nice guns, but none of the I’ve seen have been anywhere near as nice as this one. In fact, it’s this is the best Hussey Imperial I’ve ever seen.

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

On this one, the engraving on the fences and action, as well as the overall finish on all the metalwork, is a step above any of the others I’ve come across. With it’s high stock, long chambers, tight chokes, heavy proof, and wide, file-cut rib, it sure looks like it was made for live-pigeon shooting. Sure, the buttstock is a bit plain. But it is original and I bet the maker used the blank because of the strength of its straight grain. I’d be looking at the rest of the gun and never notice it.

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun

Ogden Smiths & Hussey Imperial Ejector SxS Shotgun: A fabulous quality and condition pre-war 12 bore double trigger gun retaining nearly all of its original color 90% plus, and a London black. Gold line cocking indicators, exquisite very fine rose and scroll engraving with carved fences. The 30 inch Whitworth steel barrels with a pigeon rib, have the original 3 inch chambers with 1 3/8 ounce proof, choked full and full. The stock measures 14 1/2 to a checkered horn plate with a drop of 1 1/2 by 2 1/8. The gun weight is 7lbs. 7 oz. Articulated front trigger and the guard has 80% of it’s charcoal blue. Locking screws on the first guard and ejector stop screw. Blank gold oval. This gun is as good as it gets from a best maker. Price: $18,500

WESTLEY RICHARDS 8 BORE- 16 Lbs. 3 Oz.- EXHIBIT PIECE at PARIS WORLD’S FAIR in 1900- 26″ FULLY RIFLED DAMASCUS Bbls.- EXC. BORES- CASED: Westley Toplever Centerfire Patent Ejector 8 Bore Rifle Finished in 1900 as an Exhibition Piece for the Paris World’s Fair in 1900, The barrels are 26″ Ejector Damascus fully rifled with 9 groove rifling with “C” Bolting” Dolls Head extension with a Third Bite, They both are initialed “F.L.” which most likely was Fred Lilley, A swamped concave stippled and engraved rib with 2 folding engraved sights at 50 & 100 yards, The rib engraved “3 1/4″ Case 12 Drams Spherical Ball 10 Drams Conical Bullet” which is special as the rifling pitch is such to handle both a round or conical bullet with the 12 dram or 10 dram load respectively, Top tang safety, Full length trigger guard tang to a steel engraved grip cap with a Bull Elephant engraved on the trigger guard bow, Extremely solid and sound wood with very nice color & contrast, Shadowline cheekpiece, Checkered side panels with carved teardrops, Sling eyes, Deeley & Edge forend release with a horn tip, John Deeley was the managing director of Westley from 1872 to 1899, He helped create the famous Anson & Deeley action, Great stock length at 15 1/8″ LOP over a 7/8″ Silvers pad, Great weight at 16 Lbs. 3 Oz., This is a full rifled set of barrels and the bores remain excellent and I would put the right bore at 90% and the left bore at 95-96% from the day they were rifled, All the screws are in very good to excellent shape and nearly everyone lays north & south, Original damascus pattern remains at 80%, The wood finish remains at 90%, The checkering remains at 97%, The whole is cased in an oak & leather brass cornered trunk with proper cleaning accessories. This is an interesting 8 bore with an Anson & Deeley toplever action with ejectors and certainly worthy as an exhibit gun at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900. It comes with a very interesting and original Paris World’s Fair catalog that is great reading of a bygone era.  Price: $45,000

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED - EXCELLENT

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED – EXCELLENT

I’ve always loved Ithaca’s Flues-grade SxSs. I don’t what it is about them, but every I see one, I get that urge to buy it — especially when I see one as nice as this.

The Flues was introduced in 1908 to 1926 when it was replaced by the NID.  Ithaca made a ton of them in that period — 223,000 — and it was certainly one of the most popular side-by-sides ever made in America.

Today, ones like this are great little grouse guns. Just be sure you shoot them with lightweight, low pressure shells.

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED - EXCELLENT

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED – EXCELLENT

ITHACA 16 GA SIDE x SIDE FLUES MODEL, CASED – EXCELLENTThis is a very unusual gun, in what I believe to be a factory fitted hard case from the period of manufacture – even though it does not have a factory label inside. This so called Flues Model Ithaca side by side is a 1&1/2 grade and so marked. Gun has 28 inch barrels with modified and full chokes, and plain extractors.  Barrels are like new in and out except for one small spot on the left barrel at breech which appears to be a rub mark from the case. Forearm is likewise like new.  Factory engraved receiver has just about all the case color with the exception of one small spot of pitting on top of the receiver to the right of the front of the toplever – hardly noticeable. Stock finish is original and excellent with slight bubbling – perhaps caused by heat in storage. Could easily be hand rubbed out to a wonderful finish – ditto for the forearm which has all the finish presently.  This gun and its wonderful case have definitely been in storage for many, many years and that is the reason it has most all of the original rust blue and vivid case colors. Even has the original Ithaca hard rubber buttplate.  Priced to sell quickly. Shipping will be $50.00 because of the weight of the hard case.  Price: $1,295

L.C. Smith Hunter Arms Damascus Side by Side Pre-1913 Pigeon Grade Shotgun

L.C. Smith Hunter Arms Damascus Side by Side Pre-1913 Pigeon Grade Shotgun

A hundred years ago, live pigeon shooting was a huge pastime in the U.S. People participated in shoots throughout the country, and the top shots traveled the country–and the world–competing and winning huge amounts of prize money.

Gunmakers responded to this popularity by building shotguns for this sport. Here’s the one that L.C. Smith offered from 1893-1913. It’s a Pigeon grade, and it looks like it’s in excellent original condition. I have to say, I really like it — especially the damascus bbls and the blush of color-case hardening on the action. I love how L.C. Smith finished the fences, too, as well as the overall shape of the stock. Very nice.

According to the L.C. Smith collector’s website:

L.C. Smith Hunter Arms Damascus Side by Side Pre-1913 Pigeon Grade Shotgun

L.C. Smith Hunter Arms Damascus Side by Side Pre-1913 Pigeon Grade Shotgun

“Only 1,397 Pigeon Guns were produced from 1893 through 1913 including four 10 gauge, 1,350 12 gauge, 23 16 gauge, and 20 20 gauge guns. Automatic ejectors were fitted to 883 guns. The catalog (1900) stated: “Our Pigeon Gun is an innovation. Appreciating that there is a demand for a very quick shooting gun, we deliver this grade. The straight grip admits the most rapid work possible and supplies a want long felt by many sportsmen. They are specially adapted to stand the tremendous strain of many heavy loads of nitro powder.” The stock was said to be: “A choice piece of French walnut, beautifully figured. The richness of the color in these finer stocks is superb. They are all finished in oil equal to the best pianos and consequently please the most exacting . . .” Stocks were not straight. could be ordered with a pistol grip and a Monte Carlo. Pigeon Nitro Steel barrels were available in 12 and 16 gauges, and Chainette Damascus barrels were available in 10, 12, and 16 gauges. Twenty gauge guns were available starting in 1907. The 20 gauge guns were only made with Pigeon Nitro Steel barrels. The catalog said: “The engraving is

L.C. Smith Hunter Arms Damascus Side by Side Pre-1913 Pigeon Grade Shotgun

L.C. Smith Hunter Arms Damascus Side by Side Pre-1913 Pigeon Grade Shotgun

handsome and very appropriate for a gun of this character. On one lock plate is engraved with a pigeon in full flight, on the other is a blue rock, and on the extension rib a pigeon in his native home. You will always find an artistic and appropriate finish on Smith Guns . . .” A precious metal bar was inlaid across the rib near the engraved pigeon. Engraved forward of the bar is HUNTER ARMS CO., MAKERS FULTON N.Y. Lightweight guns were available in 12, 16, and 20 gauges, and the Hunter One-Trigger was an option for about $25. The price increased from $125 at the start of production to $150 in 1898, but it dropped to $110 by 1912.”

L.C. SMITH No. 2 12 GAUGE HAMMERLESS SXS SHOTGUN

L.C. SMITH No. 2 12 GAUGE HAMMERLESS SXS SHOTGUN

Twelve-gauge, L.C. Smith No. 2s are not hard guns find– unless you’re looking for an example with the kind of condition you see here. Hunter Arms made 10,815 of them from 1890-1914, and according to the L.C. Smith Collector’s site, they turned out the one you see here in 1899.

Yeah, 1899. That’s before Ford introduced it’s first car and before most people in the US had electricity.

L.C. SMITH No. 2 12 GAUGE HAMMERLESS SXS SHOTGUN

No. 2s weren’t fancy guns, and most of the one you see today are pretty banged up. This one looks like it has barely been used, and except for the pad and maybe a light refinish to the back of the buttstock, I’m thinking it’s all original. So take a long look at it, because doing so is almost like taking a trip back in time.

A beautiful high condition early L.C. Smith SxS. 12 ga with 2-3/4″ chambers. Serial range of 103k making it built in about 1898-1900. Early characteristics including the early style sideplate, rectangular safety window and dogs head on the forearm. High condition with beautiful blue bbls that are just as nice on the inside. Frame has all case colors remaining. Most are very vivid. Grade 2 bird engravings on the sidelocks. Wood is exceptional and has the very thin wrist with pistol grip knob. LOP 14″ from the added white line recoil pad. Fine early shotgun! Price: $4,875.

Some guys like pointers; some guys like setters. And some guys even like dogs like Wirehaired griffons. If you’re one of those guys who like things that are a little different, this double is for you.

It’s a Darne. Patented in 1881 by gunmaker Regis Darne, these double feature a very unique sliding actions which moves back from the barrels to expose the chambers. It’s an unusual design, and like griffs, not for everyone.

I’m not sure what grade this one is, but it is a nice looking double with a lot of genuine looking finish. The engraving is pretty nice, too. If quirky is your thing, you should grab it before it’s gone.

L.C. Smith Trap Grade, 20 ga. side by side shotgun 26" & 28" bbls

L.C. Smith Trap Grade, 20 ga. side by side shotgun 26″ & 28″ bbls

Here’s a hard-to-find vintage American double in fantastic original condition. It’s a 20 gauge L.C. Smith Trap Grade, and it’s up for auction now at Gunrunnerauctions.com. If you collect Elsies, bid now. I doubt you’ll see a better one of these any time soon.

According to the L.C. Smith website, Hunter Arms Co. made 3346 Trap-grade sxs shotguns. Of those, 348 were 20 gauges. The site also says:

L.C. Smith Trap Grade, 20 ga. side by side shotgun 26" & 28" bbls

L.C. Smith Trap Grade, 20 ga. side by side shotgun 26″ & 28″ bbls

“Production of the Trap Grade began in 1912 and ran to 1940. The 1913 catalog stated “In the production of this grade particular attention has been paid to meet the requirements of sportsmen who are desirous of a gun for trap shooting, as well as for field, with all of the latest attachments – Hunter One-Trigger and Automatic Ejector especially – and at a very low price. Each lock-plate is engraved with a trap shooting scene consisting of a trap house and a squad of five shooters at the score. We can confidently recommend this grade as entirely satisfactory, especially for the purpose the name implies. With our special system of boring, no better guns are made for trap than the L.C. Smith Double Gun with Hunter One-Trigger.” The price with two triggers in 1913 was $55, and a Hunter One-Trigger brought the price up to $75. Ejectors added $11 to the price, and $86 would buy the gun with both ejectors and the Hunter One-Trigger. The base price of this grade increased to $77 by the time that it was discontinued in 1940. ”

L.C. Smith Trap Grade, 20 ga. side by side shotgun 26″ & 28″ bbls

L.C. Smith Trap Grade, 20 ga. side by side shotgun 26″ & 28″ bbls: Serial #8013, mfg. 1916 by Hunter Arms Co., Fulton, NY. Excellent condition. The rare “Trap Grade” in 20 ga. AND two-barrel set – all matching serial numbers on all iron. Grade E with scroll engraved receiver – left panel has a trapshooting squad of five men and a trap; right panel has a lone hunter shooting at a flushing bird. Case color is mostly gone on the receiver, but about 15% is in protected areas. Good tight action. Two barrels included: One 26″ barrel with solid rib, two ivory beads, bright bore, beavertail forearm; and one 28″solid rib barrel with two ivory beads, bright bores, splinter forearm. The 26″ barrel has 98% bright blue and the 28″ barrel has 90% blue with some wear near the muzzles. Wood is fancy with excellent dark burl and sharp checkering – appears to be have been refinished when the red Jostam recoil pad was fitted. Hunter One single trigger works well. Ejectors are strong and throw hulls across the room. LOP is 14″ over pad. Both barrels are marked “L.C. Smith Trap Grade” – 28″ barrel is also marked “Hunter Arms Co. Inc., Fulton, NY, USA” on top. Includes Cody factory letter stating the Grade E and Trap model and noting the 26″ barrel. The shotgun was finished on June 30, 1916. The second barrel was made in the factory, but it is correct to not see that noted in a factory letter.

James Purdey 10 Bore SxS Hammer Gun

James Purdey 10 Bore SxS Hammer Gun

There are a lot of Purdeys on the market today. Some are worked over, some are worn out  and some are overpriced. A lot are of them are all three, and that’s why so many of these guns have been looking for buyers for so long. But every now and then a real legit Purdey pops up. When it does, it usually sells right away.

This is one of these nicest vintage Purdeys I’ve seen in a while. It has condition and it was reasonably price. That’s why it sold in fewer than 12 hours.

James Purdey 10 Bore SxS Hammer Gun

James Purdey 10 Bore SxS Hammer Gun

From what I can tell, this gun was made in the late 1860s, early 1870s. Westley Richards invented the toplever in the 1862 and James Purdey patented their underbolt in 1863. The Scott spindle used to connect the two was patented in 1865. The gun you see here uses all three, so it has to be post 1865.

James Purdey 10 Bore SxS Hammer Gun

James Purdey 10 Bore SxS Hammer Gun

This gun also has a keyed forend, a feature from the percussion era that Purdey stop using when they switched to the Anson-patent forend release (introduced in 1872), and bar-action locks, which Purdey was just switching to as it developed a more modern look for its guns. One thing it’s missing is drop-points. This is pretty common on earlier Purdey. The sideclips are interesting. You don’t see side clips on a hammergun, and this has to be one of the first doubles Purdey used them on.

20ga. Browning BSS Sporter SxS Shotgun

20ga. Browning BSS Sporter SxS Shotgun

Of all the world’s major gunmakers, few have been around as long as Browning and fewer have made as wide a variety of firearms. Many of Browning’s guns were built on patents created by the company’s brilliant founder: John Moses Browning. But while JM  did invent everything from the M1911 pistol to the Superposed, he never came up with his own design for a SxS.

But that doesn’t mean Browning never “built” them.

20ga. Browning BSS Sporter SxS Shotgun

20ga. Browning BSS Sporter SxS Shotgun

In fact, Browning introduced it’s first side-by-side shotgun in 1972. It was the 12g BSS boxlock, and in 1973 the company added a 20g. These guns were actually made in Japan by Miroku and they  had beavertail forends and pistol-grip stocks. The trimmer, straight gripped Sporter models came out in ’78. (BTW: So did another classic — the Bee Gees’ Night Fever). Of all these BSS guns, ones Sporters with 28″ barrels are the toughest to find.

That’s why this 20g BSS caught my eye. While it’s not cheap, it is a nice gun at a fair price. It’s also pretty light for a 20g Browning with two tubes. For those reasons, I bet it will sell pretty quickly.

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE, From James D. Julia Auctioneers

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE, From James D. Julia Auctioneers

Like lightweight guns? Then you’ll hate this 4 gauge. At 21 lbs 4 oz., it weighs more than 3 Browning Superlights, and with its 4″, 4-bore chambers, it pushes out more lead, too.

Back in the 19th century, short barreled shotgun/rifles like this were used on the largest of large land mammals. They were essentially shotguns with rifled barrels. With it’s massive size, this one is more cannon than gun. It fires two shotgun-style shells, each stuffed with a single, ping-pong sized lead ball. That’s almost enough umph! to stop a train, and also why the thing is so heavy. Even at 20+lbs, I bet the recoil is more vicious than the animal you would be shooting at.

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE, From James D. Julia Auctioneers

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE, From James D. Julia Auctioneers

This particular one was made for an bigwig in India. Indian nobleman used to buy crates of shotguns and rifles from the major British makers. Who knows what this one saw or who hands touched it? We do know that James D. Julia Auctioneers sold it October, 2015, for $149,500. For a 130-year old gun, that’s a very princely sum.

BTW: If you have an old double barrel shotgun or rifle you would like to know more about (including its value), just drop me an email at gregg@dogsanddoubles.com

Here’s all the info on this double from the auctioneer:

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE. SN 8336.: Cal. 4 bore. (.955 Groove diameter, 11 groove Enfield type rifling) 4″ Chambers. 24″ Fine Damascus bbls, swamped at center with slight flare toward muzzles, are fitted with full length flat rib with dolls head extension. Rear portion behind single standing leaf express rear sight marked for 50 yards, is file cut. Central portion of rib is engraved “Presented to Mirza Toffal Ali Beg Khan Bahadur by Nawab Salar Jung Mukhtar-ul Mulk, Prime Minister of Hyderabad, Ootagamund, June 15, 1885”. Silver bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into rib. Top of right bbl is engraved with H&H New Bond street address. Top of left is engraved “Winners of All the “Field” Rifle Trials London 1883″. Breech ends are engraved with wide acanthus bands behind 2-3/8″ triangles of exceptionally well cut scrolling acanthus with floral centers. Matching bands are at muzzles. Gun is numbered “2” on top of dolls head extension, top tang, and on forend iron. Bbl flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for 6 bore. SNs are stamped on bottoms of bbls. A large sling eye is soldered to bottom rib. Massive case hardened Jones underlever round bar action (almost 3-1/2″ across breech face) has nicely filed fences, and is fitted with rebounding back action locks by Brazier sporting large, flat bodied, serpentine hammers with dolphin heads. Top tang extends over comb. Action and locks are engraved with 30% coverage well cut sprays of scroll, as background and accent to very well rendered scenes of big game animals, many for which this rifle would be suited. Right side of action depicts a rhinoceros with large deciduous and palm trees in background. Left side depicts an elephant strolling through open savannah with some trees and mountain in background. A bear in similar background is on left lockplate, and a well limned tiger burns bright from the right. A fine portrait of a lion is on top of action between hammers. SN and “2” are on trigger guard tang which extends to horn grip cap. Fiddle figured and lightly streaked dense European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/8″ over Silver type pad, and features right hand shadow line cheekpiece, point pattern checkering with mullered borders at grip, and a sling eye, matching but smaller than that on bottom of bbl, on toe line. Central portion of cheekpiece has inset gold circle engraved with complex monogram including the large letters “S” and “J” intertwined with smaller letters “M” and “K” and “JUS”. (This rifle is almost identical, except for some nuances of engraving, with four bore rifle no. 8333, made for the Nizam of Hyderabad, and pictured and described on pages 67-69 in HOLLAND & HOLLAND THE ROYAL GUNMAKER by Donald Dallas. Factory records indicate that both rifles were ordered through Rogers, Rock & Co., H&H’s Indian agents. This rifle was undoubtedly part of a large shipment of big bore rifles for various Indian princes.) Matching broad splinter forend has pivoting lever release. Drop at heel: approx 3-5/16″, drop at comb: approx 2-1/4″. Weight: 21 lbs 4 oz. LOP: 14-3/8”.

PROVENANCE: Copy of factory ledger page, confirming specs and stating rifle was regulated with 14 drams of powder in a spherical ball.

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE, From James D. Julia Auctioneers

HUMONGOUS HOLLAND & HOLLAND FOUR BORE DOUBLE ELEPHANT RIFLE, From James D. Julia Auctioneers

CONDITION: Very fine. Bbls retain over 80% orig Damascus brown with some areas of further browning and discoloration with a number of light marks and dings. Action and locks retain 60 – 70% orig case hardening color with some brown staining and high edges silvered. Top of action colors are vivid, fading and turning brown along grip strap. Trigger guard is essentially all gray to brown patina with traces of dark color hardening under opening lever. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish over numerous marks and dings, both heavy and light. Sharp edges are slightly rounded. Wood is somewhat below metal at top of grip, which shows a number of well done repairs. Checkering nicely re-cut. Forend wood is fine, checkering re-cut, with a small chip at right front of bbl channel. Pad is an old replacement, fitted to orig curve, and factory specs state rifle was originally made with a “recoil buttplate”. Bores are excellent, very shiny with sharp rifling throughout, with one or two minor imperfections, most likely small flaws in Damascus. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. An exceptionally cool big bore. Estimate: $60,000-$90,000.

Winchester Model 21 16 Gauge FIELD SxS: 6LBS 7OZ, SPLINTER, EJECTORS, 2 TRIGGERS

I know what you’re thinking: What’s so rare about a 16 gauge Winchester Model 21? If that’s all this double was, I’d say “nuttin”.

But this SxS has three important important features which push it in the holi-cr@p-that’s-hard-to-find category: double triggers, ejectors, and very shootable dimensions.

Winchester Model 21 16 Gauge FIELD SxS: 6LBS 7OZ, SPLINTER, EJECTORS, 2 TRIGGERS

The Winchester M21 was produced for 60 years: 1931 to 1991. In that time, Winchester built around 30,000. By the time the M21 hit the market, pumps and auto loaders were taking over the American market and SXS shotguns were on their way out. Fortunately, enough shooters preferred classics like this and kept the M21 in production for so long.
