LANCASTER 8 BORE UNDERLEVER HAMMER LONDON NITRO PROVED- 13 Lbs. 12 Oz.- 36″ DAMASCUS NP Bbls.- 1882- TOTALLY ORIGINAL PIECE

Pound for pound, here’s one of the best shotgun deals you’ll find anywhere. This massive 8g Lancaster double barrel weighs an arm-aching 13 lbs. 12 oz. It’s priced at $11,500 — or about $52.27 an ounce. It has 3 1/4″ chambers and it’s nitro-proofed to push a lot of shot: 2 1/4 ounces.

Eight gauges  like this weren’t “market guns”. They were far too expensive for most people to afford, and the richy-riches who bought them used to pass shoot ducks, geese, and swans. In the 19th century, they were popular with hunters in the UK up and down the Eastern Seaboard, but in the 20th century the US Federal Government foolishly outlawed their use on all migratory species.

Today, some states allow you to use on turkeys and other game species while others have outlawed them completely for hunting. You may be able to use them on waterfowl in Canada, and in the UK guys still lug them out to the marshes and flyways.

Here is the embodiment of 1882 Lancaster Quality; excellent bores, strong wood with nice figure, 8 bore weight, nitro proof barrels and it comes to the hand with ease even with this size and weight plus it balances very well. All these city-light gun writers that try to convince the shooting public that we all need shot barrels that are 3 feet long; here is there piece to grind clay targets into dust. We are working on a source for proper 8 bore loads that already have been used in this nitro proved piece that patterns well at 40 yards with either #5 or 6 shot. Fun stuff here. Price: $11,500

A.H. Fox "A" Grade 12 bore, Philly SxS Shotgun, 32" bbls

A.H. Fox “A” Grade 12 bore, Philly SxS Shotgun, 32″ bbls

It’s rare that a twelve-gauge, A-grade Fox excites me. But when I saw this one, I started doing the mental math to figure out how to pay for it. With it’s straight grip and 32″ barrels, it’s an unusual A grade.

But even though the gun looks right, that butt stock has me scratching my head. Is it really original? Te fact that it’s “cast on” for a lefty raises questions. If I were going to add this SxS to my safe, I would be sure to take a much closer look at it (and probably order a letter from The A.H. Fox Collector’s Club).

A.H. Fox “A” Grade 12 bore, Philly SxS Shotgun: 32″ bbls. choked tight & full, DT’s, extractor, oil finished hand checkered American walnut, 14 1/4″ LOP over factory buttplate, 1/4″ cast ‘ON’ (left handed favorable), 75% case colors, 95% bbl. blue, most minor of handling, This Fox is pure & has mountains of curb appeal (Phizazz) tight as new & all original so. Price: $3,999

The engraver, G.Ranetti, proudly signed this work on the trigger plate to the right of the trigger. The receiver is literally covered with extremely fine and detailed small scroll with interspersed acanthus and floral scroll over-lays. Perfect shading and delicated gold inlays in certain areas make this a memorable piece. This fine engraving work continues to the trigger guard, upper and lower tang, operating lever, butt plate frame and forearm latching hardware. This is the ultimate of 100% coverage. The bottom of the left barrel is engraved “W.L.Moore, Westlake, CA. Mod KING 1″.

What the heck? A James Woodward SxS with a Purdey thumbhole?

12g James Woodward & Son SxS Shotgun with a Purdey-patent thumbhole underlver

12g James Woodward & Son SxS Shotgun with a Purdey-patent thumbhole snap action

Here’s something unsual: A hammerless 12g James Woodward & Sons side-by-side shotgun with a second-pattern James Purdey & Sons thumbhole lever. Very odd.

This Woodward looks like it’s right around the turn of the 19th century. In it’s day, the action was pretty current technology. But the mechanism that opens it — the Purdey thumbhole lever — is from an earlier generation of gunmaking.

James Purdey & Sons introduced it’s second-pattern thumbhole in the late 1860s. It was a refined version of the company’s first patent thumbhole, introduced in 1863 to go along with Purdey’s new double-bite bolt. By the mid 1870s, Purdey started transitioning to the toplever/Scott spindle setup on its hammerguns, and then it went to that system on almost all it’s shotguns by the the 1880s.

So what is this old fashion design doing with younger Woodward? I guess whoever ordered the gun wanted it there. Perhaps they were familiar with the system and wanted to stick with it on their new shotgun. And if that’s what the customer wanted (and could pay for) that’s what Woodward would have done.

Another great 8 gauge, this one by E & C Sneider, Baltimore, MD …

Antique Sneider 8 gauge double barrel sxs shotgun

Antique Sneider 8 gauge double barrel sxs shotgun

Here’s a real rare double. It’s an 8g Sneider made in the 1880s. When this SxS was built, it was one of the finest hammerless shotguns being made in America — and one of the most innovative.

E & C Sneider was founded by  Charles Edward Sneider. He learned his trade in Europe and by 1859 he was in Baltimore working for Thomas Poultney & David B. Trimble. By 1865, Sneider was on his own, working in Baltimore from a shop on 66 S Sharp St. In 1874 his sons  — Charles Lewis & Charles William  — were working with him. Charles William filed the patent that created this shotgun in 1880.

This patent cocked on the fall of the barrels and the locks used coiled springs, which were thought to be more reliable than leaf springs. It also featured a unique trigger safety which used a serrated dial on the toplever to engage a rod pointing up from the top of the action. When this dial was pushed forward, it pressed down on this rod and freed the trigger sear for firing.

Antique Sneider 8 gauge double barrel sxs shotgun

Antique Sneider 8 gauge double barrel sxs shotgun

Sneider built several grades of shotguns on this patent. The top grades (like the one shown here), locked up with a sliding bolt which engaged a bite in the rear barrel lump and top extension. They also featured compensating hinge pin which could be adjusted for wear and a unique sliding barrel stop which kept the barrels from wearing on the hinge pin when the gun was opened.

Eight gauges like this were popular up and down the Eastern seaboard. They were far too expensive to buy and be used as “market guns” by commercial hunters. Instead, sportsmen used them to pass shoot ducks, geese & swans.

Here’s more info on this 8g.

C. W. Snieder patent of 1880 for a hammerless shotgun

C. W. Snieder patent of 1880 for a hammerless shotgun

This is a very rare Baltimore made, Antique Sneider 8 gauge shotgun. E &C. Sneider guns where made in Baltimore MD in the 19th century. This one being a high grade 8ga is extremely rare. This gun is well made, heavy and large. The Damascus barrels are 36″ long. They are solid and I see no dents. There is still some Damascus color and swirl. There are some dark spots in the bores, but overall they are clean and shiny. The action is tight. The firing pins look good and overall the gun is in fine functional condition. The engraving is very nice, as you can see. The wood is a high grade and in very good condition. The buttplate is original and nice, but does show a slight gap between the stock. The forend is in fine shape, but it could be a little tighter to the barrels. This is a large and heavy shot gun, weighing 14.6 lbs. A really fine piece for any antique gun collection.

LC SMITH CROWN GRADE SxS SHOTGUN 16 GAUGE

LC SMITH CROWN GRADE SxS SHOTGUN 16 GAUGE

High-grade L.C. Smith are some of the best-looking doubles ever made in America. Check out this 16g Crown grade to see why.

The Hunter Arms Company made the Crown from 1912-1950, and when it was first introduced it to replaced the company’s No. 5 grade. Crown grades were available in four gauges –  10, 12, 16, and 20 – and in .410. Hunter Arms built 862 Crowns, and 68 of these were in 16 gauge.

They were all made-to-order shotgun, so the specific subject of the engraving patterns, the barrel lengths, and stock measurements could all be dictated by the buyer. That being said, most of the Crowns I’ve seen have had 28″ or 30″ bbls.

LC SMITH CROWN GRADE SxS SHOTGUN 16 GAUGE

This 16g was made in the mid 1930s. At that time, A. F. Stoeger listed an L.C. Smith Crown like this at $292.50, a whole lot more than a basic Winchester Model 21 ($73.40) and a just little more than a Parker CHE with a single trigger ($267.50).

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth 16 GA Utica NY. 28” barrels

Here’s a great way to start an affair with nice American doubles. With 28″ barrels and what looks like an all-original finish, this Fox Sterlingworth is nice. And the price  –$1095 — makes is even nicer.

From 1910 to about 1940, A.H. Fox and then the Savage Arms Company built around 140,000 Sterlingworths. Most were 12 gauges, but about 23,000 were 16s. Whatever the gauge, these side-by-sides were, and still are, great doubles — especially when they’re priced right.

JOHN DICKSON & SON, THE ROUND ACTION GUNMAKER, by Donald Dallas

JOHN DICKSON & SON, THE ROUND ACTION GUNMAKER, by Donald Dallas

About twenty-five years ago, the beginning of the double-gun renaissance began. The Double Gun Journal was a big part of this resurgence. So were Donald Dallas’s books on the famous London gunmakers.

Dallas published his first book  — Boss & Co, Builders of Best Guns Only — in 1995.  Books about James Purdey & Sons and Holland & Holland followed. While information about all these makers had already been published many times, Dallas’s books were these firms’s definitive histories. His original research corrected many errors and resulted in page after page of new information.

Dallas’s latest book — JOHN DICKSON & SON, THE ROUND ACTION GUNMAKER — does the same. With 352 pages and 447 photographs, this hefty, coffee-table size book tells two amazing stories: One is of  John Dickson & Son; the other is of how much love the author has for this firm.

Dallas spent years researching and writing this book, and to get it into print he used his own funds. It is based on hundred of hours of original research, as well as on Dallas’s exclusive access to the maker’s archive and records. Along with the history of the company, readers will also find:

-Full color pictures of some of the finest Dickson firearms to ever be built.

-The ledgers of John Dickson & Son, with information on the 7,000 or so firearms the company built from 1840 – 2010.

-Production figures for Dicksons guns, rifles, and pistols.

-The patents of John Dickson & Son.

-The trade labels used by the company.

-A reprint of two John Dickson & Son catalogs, 1935 & 1962.

– The story of Charles Gordon, The mad Scottish gun Collector and Dickson patron.

The price for all this is just £60 plus postage.

JOHN DICKSON & SON, THE ROUND ACTION GUNMAKER: A stunning, detailed history of John Dickson & Son from 1794 to the present day.

Established in 1838 at 60 Princes Street, Edinburgh, the firm quickly gained a reputation for building very high quality guns and rifles, their two-groove percussion rifles achieving international acclaim. John Dickson (3) made the greatest contribution to the firm by patenting the round action gun in 1880 that instantly achived critical acclaim as a best gun utilising a trigger plate action. The beautiful and elegant three-barrelled gun followed in 1882 and by the time the ejector had been patented in 1887 the Dickson round action had been perfected. In 1923 John Dickson (3) retired and the business was sold. In 1928 the firm moved to 32 Hanover Street and in 1937 to 21 Frederick Street, the present day location of the firm.

This book goes into great detail on all the types of Dickson guns and rifles built and was written with the full permission of John Dickson & Son. 352 pages, 447 photographs.

J. Purdey Percussion SxS, 1847 vintage, 50 bore

J. Purdey Percussion SxS, 1847 vintage, 50 bore

A couples friends of mine are crazy about muzzleloading Purdeys. Take a look at this one and you’ll see why.

James Purdey built 809 double-barrel percussion rifles.  The first was sold in 1827 and the last — 32-bore back action for eccentric Scottish collector Charles Gordon — left Purdey’s in 1896.

According to the The Early Purdeys, this percussion rifle was sold by Purdey in August of 1847. It was a 50-bore (not a 50 caliber) with 27″ barrels. The JP marks on the underside of the barrels indicate that these barrels were forged by James Purdey (the firm), instead of being outsourced to barrel maker like Charles Lancaster (CL).

When this rifle was made, James Purdey had been running his own business for 31 years. Shotguns, rifles, and pistols like this built his reputation and established his firm as one of the top gunmakers in the UK.

GREAT CONDITION!!!! 12ga Inman Meffert, Suhl SxS shotgun

GREAT CONDITION!!!! 12ga Inman Meffert, Suhl SxS shotgun

Raise your hands if you think this Immanuel Meffert shotgun is an Anson & Deeley boxlock.

That’s what I thought at first. But as I looked closer, a few things kept telling me I was wrong: the single pin in the side of the action, the wide top-strap under the toplever, the cocked indicators on this top strap, and the position of the triggers (they look too far back for a boxlock). Very odd, and not very A & D boxlock.

After I poked around online a bit, I figured out what was going on: This shotguns is made on a “Treff” Action – a unique design built by Immanuel Meffert from 1912 to 1929. On a Treff, the lockwork is mounted on the topstrap. That’s why it’s so wide. The barrels cock this lockwork when they drop, and that pin in the side of the action secured the cocking rod.

Abercrombie & Fitch / Zoli - Rizzini SXS, 12 GA shotgun

Abercrombie & Fitch / Zoli – Rizzini SXS, 12 GA shotgun

Here’s a great deal on a very nice little double. Abercrombie & Fitch imported these Anson & Deeley style boxlocks in the 1960s and maybe in the ’50s, too. These guns were made in Italy by Guido Rizzini, his brothers, and another Italian gunmaker named Rinaldo Zoli. They’re simple, solid doubles, built on one of the finest side-by-side actions ever created.

This one is in the most versatile gauge ever (12), it’s the perfect weight for upland hunting (6 1/2lbs), it has nice, modern dimentions (14.25″ LOP, 1 1/2 DAC, 2 1/4″ DAH), and it’s cheap  — just $749.99. Oh – and it also has 28″ bbls, 2 3/4″ chambers, and great chokes (IC & M). Honestly, I don’t know why I’m telling you guys about it. I should just buy it for myself.

Here’s the info on the gun from the seller:

Ithaca Grade 4E 16 Gauge SxS Shotgun. FLUES, 97% FACTORY CASE COLOR, NICEYear 1920, 16 Gauge, 7lbs 4oz. This gun, sn330025 built in 1920 is a great example, with 97% vivid factory case color, 92% factory barrel blue, 98% factory trigger guard blue, and near new highly figured factory finished wood with beautiful flor-de-lis checkering.  This is a HIGH CONDITION FACTORY ORIGINAL GUN.  Even the jewelling at the breech face is still evident.  The only thing that seems to be altered since the gun left the factory are the chokes, as the gun is stamped “4 & 4″ which would indicate F/F chokes.  The 28″ barrels are presently choked IC/M (.007/.017) with their double ivory beads and mirror bores.  This is a gun for heavy work, with minimum wall thickness of 36 thousandths and weighing 7 1/4lbs.  What a great sporting clays gun or pheasant gun for heavy loads!  Engraved by the famous Joseph Loy, with his trademark signature, the gun is near new in all ways, including being tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun.  This is a single trigger gun that still has the ornate factory butt plate and great stock dimensions.  A great investment in an American treasure.  Price: $5,250

Parker GH 12 – Damascus, Collector Quality

Condition: 98% case colors, sharp engraving, screws are indexed correctly and doesn’t appear to have been dissaembled . The barrel pattern and finish are fine with some wear. I believe is has the original wood finish and checkering. The wood is proud of the receiver and the checkering has appropriate wear from carrying. The bores are smooth and clear.  An orginal Parker canvas gun case and a rosewood cleaning rod are included with the gun. The PGCA Letter is included. This is one of the nicest 12 gauge Parkers I’ve owned. It points and shoots exceptionally well. A nice piece for the trap range or the man cave. Price: $3,995

12 gauge Lefever Arms Co Double Barrel SxS Shotgun

12 gauge Lefever Arms Co Double Barrel SxS Shotgun

Here’s a great looking American double that’s coming to auction tomorrow, 7/25 @ 9am EST. Morphy’s Auctions in Denver, PA, has the gun. From what I can see, it looks like a nice, old SXS. The only problem I can see is the bbls look like they may have been blued at one time – but I could be wrong.

Daniel Myron Lefever was a prolific American inventor and he patented the design this shotgun is built on in 1880.

12 gauge Lefever Arms Co Double Barrel SxS Shotgun: Serial # 26295 This early C grade reads Lefever Arms Company on the right barrel and Fine Damascus Steel on the left barrel. The 30″ barrels have 2 – 1/2″ chambers and a bore diameter of .742 on both tubes. With a choke constriction of .036 on each tube this makes it choked full and full. The highly engraved receiver has hunting scenes with a dog in a circle on both the right and left side plate. The gun features double triggers, automatic ejectors, cocking indicators, tear drop side panels and a checkered capped pistol grip. The highly figured walnut buttstock has a LOP of 14 – 1/4″ to a leather pad. A silver oval shaped inlay is located 5″ from the toe. With a little TLC this gun will be ready for the October woods.

A.H. Fox CE Grade SxS Shotgun ~ 20 GA

A.H. Fox CE Grade SxS Shotgun ~ 20 GA

Here are two rare doubles that Cabela’s recently listed. CE-grade Fox shotguns are not easy to find — especially in 16 & 20 gauge. That being said, I think these two are priced very aggressively. Even though they appear to be in nice, original condition, $20,000 is a lot to for either one — especially the 16.

Here’s more about A.H. Fox C-grade shotguns from the Fox Collectors website”

A.H. Fox CE Grade SxS Shotgun ~ 16 GA

A.H. Fox CE Grade SxS Shotgun ~ 16 GA

This is the grade that has made good everywhere. In every respect it is a high grade.

It’s beauty in looks and finish. No gun will stand up better to hard work. Its every detail is perfect. And at the price it is in a class absolutely by itself.

THE BARRELS are a high quality of Chromox Fluid Steel. They are guaranteed both for accurate shooting and great strength. THE STOCK is a choice selection of dark, curly Walnut. The grain is beautifully brought out in the hand rubbed oil finish. THE ENGRAVING is the work of an artist. It stands out clear and beautiful in design. THE CHECKERING is of fine diamond pattern on grip, panels and forend.

The regular “CE” Grade FOX is equipped with automatic ejector. We carry in stock with half or full pistol grip, but will be made to order at no extra charge with straight grip.
