Bores are choked F/F. Has some original case coloring on the sides of the box lock action. The bluing is original and very good, but it is beginning to wear thin in a couple of areas. Wood is solid, no cracks or gouges and this is a very nice clean original Parker on a desirable frame size. SN is 2129XX, and the Parker Association says this gun will letter. Price: $1,800

The ribs are problem free and the wood is in very good condition too. The gun originally belonged to a man named George Eshias. I have been told that he was an Americana of Armenian heritage and that he was a famous hero in WW1 and that he fought with distinction in the US Army. I have not taken the time to confirm this, but his name has been engraved into the top of the left chamber . (Look at the photos) Hard to believe that his family let this heirloom go but life does get complicated at times. LOP is 14” and drop at the comb is 1.75, drop at the Heel is 3”. Barrels are choked F/F. Price: $2,600

28 gauge Renato Gamba SxS Principessa Double Barrel Shotgun

28 gauge Renato Gamba SxS Principessa Double Barrel Shotgun

Here’s another nice 28 gauge double barrel shotgun that just popped up on the market. This one is a Renato Gamba Principessa with double triggers, longish bbls (27+”) and a long, straight-gripped stock (15″ LOP).

Renato Gamba is an Italian gunmaker located Gardone V.T. – the heart of Italian gunmaking. The family has been making guns since the second world war, and today they’re well known in competitive circles for their O/Us. I think the little double shown here was made in the late ’80s or early ’90s, and it looks like a standard, A&D boxlock. It looks like a solid gun — and a great deal.

L.C. Smith 16 gauge No. 2 with Ejectors & 28" damascus barrels

L.C. Smith 16 gauge No. 2 with Ejectors & 28″ damascus barrels

I don’t like to sell my shotguns, especially if it’s one I’ve had for a while. Once I’ve had a double for a few seasons, we’ve been places together and shared time.

I remember slipping it out of its case at the beginning of hope-filled October days and breaking it down as I remember the points made and the birds hit and missed. The gun becomes part of my season – as important to me as the people and dogs I walk the woods with and the covers I visit.

But life is expensive, especially if you’re crazy about dogs, hunting and old shotguns. As bills pile up, some things have to go. So it’s time to say goodbye to this one: An L.C. Smith 16 gauge No. 2 with Ejectors and 28″ damascus barrels. It’s on Gunbroker.com now, and the listing ends tomorrow, 12/10/2013, at 9:00 p.m. ET.

L.C. Smith 16 gauge No. 2 with Ejectors & 28" damascus barrels

L.C. Smith 16 gauge No. 2 with Ejectors & 28″ damascus barrels

The Hunter Arms Co. introduced the No. 2 grade guns in 1890 and they built them until 1914. The No. 2 was a popular model, but people didn’t order many of them in 16 gauge. Of the 12,483 No. 2s the company made 12,483, just 793  were sixteens.

Far, far fewer of these sixteens had ejectors, damascus barrels, and double triggers. So the SxS you see here is tough to find, and when you factor in its condition, you’re looking at an extremely rare double barrel shotgun.

Alexander Henry, Gunmaker, Scotland, from Wikipedia

Alexander Henry, Gunmaker Scotland, from Wikipedia

After John Dickson & Son, Alexander Henry may be Edinburgh’s most famous gunmaker. Mr Henry   opened his business in 1853, and within a decade he was know throughout Scotland and the UK for his competition rifles, sporting rifles, and a major for the Henry rifling used in the famous Martini-Henry rifle. In 1870, he also invented snap caps.

Even though Mr Henry died in 1894, his is business lived up until about World War 1. The petite little double rifle / shotgun you see here was made at that time. The 300 Sherwood cartridge it uses was introduced by Westley Richards in 1901. Made for small game hunting, the cartridge pushes a 140 grain projectile at 1,400 feet per second and generates 610 foot pounds of energy — comparable to a .357 Magnum.

James MacNaughton & Son, Gun & Rifle Makers, Edinburh, Scotland

I often think of Birmingham and London as the centers of the UK’s double-barrel shotgun trade. Of course, both cities did make significant contributions to the history of gunmaking, but Edinburgh also played a important role.

James MacNaughton opened a shop in Edinburgh in 1864 and in 1879 he patented his triggerplate-action ‘Edinburgh Patent Hammerless Ejector’ — the world’s first “round action” design. You can read  a bit more about him on this blog post from Castle Gunmakers: James MacNaughton’s “Edinburgh” Gun – the best ever?

I feel this gun is totally original with the barrel blue still at 95%, it still has 40% original case colors and it remains super solid in every respect. Then to top all that off, the bores are excellent plus and look like new, if they were a 10 when it was new they now remain at a 9. A very solid double rifle that has a bunch of its mechanical life left in it. It has a spare set of 20 Bore 28″ ejector barrels that were fit to this gun by B.S.A. without any alteration to the original gun. They appear to have been fitted after 1925 based on the proof marks. The whole is cased in the original canvas trunk after the 20 Bore barrels were added and fits the two barrels. It has a very neat original MacNaughton trade label with the 36 Hanover address and not the former 26 Hanover address. It was possibly made for Mr. K. R. McAdams from Fredericton, New Brunswick as the trade label is marked accordingly.

JAMES MacNAUGHTON 303 NITRO ROUND ACTION TRIGGERPLATE DOUBLE RIFLE

This is special stuff from one of the most famous Edinburgh Gunmakers of the 19th century. James MacNaughton was the patentee of the first round action similar to Dickson’s own later design. His round action trigger plate lockwork was patent #2848 of 1879 which included a falling block as well as this SxS. This patent is certainly the forerunner of all the round actions that are still made to this day. The MacNaughton ejector system is patent 37759 of 1890. This classic MacNaughton system also carried a U. S. patent #264,723 of 1882. The firm became James MacNaughton & Sons at 36 Hanover in 1905, the address of this gun and remained there until 1940. Price: $31,000.00

20ga Beretta 626 Onyx Side-by-Side, 28" bbls

20ga Beretta 626 Onyx Side-by-Side, 28″ bbls

Here’s a double you rarely see. It’s a sxs 20ga Beretta 626 Onyx, and it’s up for auction now, with the listing ending tomorrow, 12/24/2013, @ 6:22:43 PM ET.

From the info I’ve found, it looks like Beretta offered 20 gauge 626s from 1985-1987. I can’t imagine the company made many of them.

20ga Beretta 626 Onyx Side-by-Side, 28″ bbls:  These guns are rare to begin with and the 28″ barrels are ultra rare. This gun is in excellent shape with only safe marks. This gun may possibly have one box of shells through it and locks up as new. It has 28″ barrels with factory interchangeable chokes. Cylinder/IC are included. It has ejectors and sst. Barrels and receiver have the factory matte finish so you do not have to worry about the blueing rusting. Center bead installed. LOP is 14 1/2 to the factory Beretta Recoil Pad. DAC is 1 1/2 and DAH is 2 3/8 and the stock is neutral.

28 gauge Boss O/U & SxS, all original, new condition

28 gauge Boss O/U & SxS, all original, new condition. Coming to auction at James D. Julia’s March 2014 sale.

Two of the world’s finest doubles? The ultimate shotguns for quail hunting? A collector’s dream? Yes, certainly, and absolutely.

What you see here is an amazing set of double barrel shotguns: A 28 gauge Boss side-by-side and a 28 gauge Boss over-under, both ordered after WW2, never used, and stored away in their original case ever since.

These Bosses were ordered on March 18th, 1955, by an American visiting Boss & Co’s Albemarle Street shop in London. They’ve been in the same family since day one, and they’re consecutively serial numbered, 200% original, and in in mint condition.

James D. Julia will be auctioning them off in their March 2014 sale. Boss has made very few 28 gauge shotguns – around 25 side-by-sides and 20 over-unders to date. A brace like this is unheard of and probably one of a kind.

Boss & Co is famous for being one of the world’s finest gunmakers, and when you see these doubles you’ll understand why. Simply stunning is the best way to describe them.

A special double: an A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20 gauge…

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

Gun collectors like little extras, and stuff like a shotgun’s original case, cleaning accessories, and retail hang tag will make a double much more special – and valuable. This 20 gauge Sterlingworth Deluxe has both, and it’s in nice original condition. I bet it will end up in a collector’s safe very soon.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG: A very unique set that has spent most of it’s entire life just a handful of miles from the Fox/Savage plant in Utica, NY. and was no doubt purchased/owned by a Savage employee. The gun is an A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe grade in 20 gauge. This is the most deluxe “Deluxe” that I have seen. The Sterlingworth Deluxe was catalogued with twin ivory beads and recoil pad which this gun has completely original. What sets this gun apart is the highly grained/figured walnut in the buttstock…very atypical for a Sterlingworth gun. This wood was generally reserved for the graded Fox guns, no doubt hand picked for the original buyer. The overall condition of this little Fox is excellent.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

It retains a generous 50-60% factory color case hardening, faded on the belly and forward sides of frame. The barrels and trigger guard retain most of their original factory blued finish. The barrels show some thinning and light scratching on typical carry areas. The wood is totally sound with good fit and finish. No cracks or serious mars. Light handling marks from gentle use. Most of the factory varnish remains on both buttstock and forend. All screws are virtually untouched. This gun locks up tight and lever is well right of center. It’s obvious that this 20ga Fox was carried more than it was shot which one would expect from a Northeast upland bird gun.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

I measure the barrels as follows: Right: 621 with 9 thou to 4 thou of choke…minimum wall thickness of 29 thou at the muzzle. Left: 621 with 8 thou choke… minimum wall thickness 35 thou. 2 3/4″ chambers. This gun still has its orginal factory hangtag included which is a delight. This gun originally had full choke right and improved cylinder left…a very unusual combination. Apparently the right barrel choke was opened at a later time to an IC constriction as well, making it better suited for close flushing birds. While the gun and hangtag are special in their own right, this set is complete with what is believed to be a factory Savage Arms era hardcase which was obviously built for this particular gun. Savage collectors will recognize this case as a similar type that was catalogued for the Savage Model 99 Rifle/410 Combination set.

A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun. Cased, with original HANGTAG

Original hang tag for the A.H. Fox Sterlingworth Deluxe 20ga SxS Shotgun

This case is larger than the rifle case but wears similar hardware and has the same type of black leatherette covering. The interior is lined in red felt with separate areas for 20ga shells, cleaning rod & jags and other accessories. I have seen no reference to this type Fox shotgun case mentioned in any of the Fox literature but by virtue of this gun’s tie to Utica and special wood I have no reason to think it was not supplied as a special order to a Savage employee/Exec. with it’s similiarity to the catalogued rifle cases. This is an unique opportunity to purchase a special set that can be used and enjoyed afield. Price: $2,995.00
