Good gun alert: A 16 gauge SxS by Army & Navy…

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful

What am I missing here? I’ve looked at this side-by-side a bunch of times, and I just don’t see any warts. Sure it has been reblued and the wood has been redone, but if the barrels are really tight and on the face, and if the gun is in proof, it’s a great deal.

The Army & Navy Co-operative Society was an organization on the UK that bought all sorts of good and supplies at low prices to members of the military. It evolved into a group of department stores carrying everything from home furnishings to firearms — sort of like Sears back in its heyday.

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautiful

Army & Navy carried all types of doubles, from top-quality sidelocks to lower-end boxlock shotguns like the 16 gauge you see here. All of these guns were made in the UK, probably by Webley & Scott. Every one I’ve seen has been a solid, reliable shotgun, and I suspect the same is true with this one.

Army & Navy 16 ga, SxS, 5.5 pounds beautifulThis is a small framed 16 ga Army & Navy with 28 inch mod and improved chokes. Barrels are tight on the face, perfect bores, and min wall thickness of .30 in both barrels, nitro proofed at 3 tons. The stock is very sound with no cracks or issues, beautifully figured, LOP is 15.5 inches. The gun weighs just 5.5 pounds. Comes with a restored and fitted H&H case. 2 1/2″ inch shells, non-ejector, case not included. Price: $950

Wow – looks at this 12 gauge Woodward…

James Woodward 12 gauge Sidelock SxS Double Barrel Shotgun

James Woodward 12 gauge Sidelock SxS Double Barrel Shotgun

I’ve been looking at old shotguns for twenty + years now, and the one thing I still love to see more than ever is original color-case hardening, especially when it has had decades to mellow and age.

This 12 gauge sidelock by James Woodward and Sons has tons of that kind of color. It also has killer engraving and all of Woodward’s signature features — 29″ barrels, arcaded fences (kind of like claw-foot pedestals), and a T-shaped safety.

James Woodward started out in the trade around 1825 with an apprenticeship with the London gunmaker Charles Moore. In 1872, he went into business as James Woodward & Sons with his two boys, James Jr. and Charles. The firm lasted until 1948 when it was sold to James Purdey & Sons.

Up until its sale, Woodward recorded 5,184 serial numbers (they started with #2,000 and ran to #7,184). So they may have made 5,184 guns. (Or, if they assigned serial #s to extra barrels and new sets of barrels, fewer than that.) Of these, I bet fewer than 2,000 are fully refined, hammerless SxSs shotguns like the one here. That’s not a lot guns. Considering they’re all 70+ years old, finding ones in excellent original condition like this are hard to do.

James Purdey & Sons, pair of 12 gauge sidelock SxS shotguns with "Extra Finish"

James Purdey & Sons, pair of 12 gauge sidelock SxS shotguns with “Extra Finish”

According to its name, a “Best” gun sounds like it should be the finest shotgun a gunmaker builds. But that’s not always the case. With some makers, there’s a grade above “Bests” — “Better Bests”, I guess.

Holland & Holland calls these Modele de Luxes. At James Purdey & Sons, they’re known as guns with “Extra finish“, and the pair of 12 gauge Purdey sidelocks you see here are just that.

Overall, guns with Extra Finish are built to the same level as the maker’s standard Best-quality guns (or maybe a bit better, in the case of this pair). But as you can see, their engraving is taken to the next level (here’s a standard Purdey).

These two may have been engraved by Ken Hunt (aka “The Godfather of Gun Engraving”), a British craftsman who worked at Purdey’s and learned his trade from Harry Kell. Along with the gorgeous engraving, the guns are beautifully made all around. Check out the metal-to-metal fit and the way the forend iron fits onto the action. Then look at those perfect drop points on the stock.

Does all this make them worth $125,000? Perhaps. Even with twice that much money, you would have a hard time duplicating the quality of these Purdeys today. Personally, I don’t think you could do it.

Winchester Model 21 Side By Side 12 Ga Double Barrel Shotgun

Winchester Model 21 Side By Side 12 Ga Double Barrel Shotgun

Get it before it’s gone (and it will be gone fast)! Winchester’s Model 21 wasn’t the most popular double ever made in America, but it was one of the most rugged.

To me, early ones like this with the boat-paddle stocks, double triggers and extractors are the most “American”. They’re sort of like basic F150s – rugged, no frills, and handsome in their own way (like an American Water Spaniel).

Issues? Well, this one is heavy. But be a man! Lightweight doubles are for sissys (and they kick harder).

These guns usually list for around $3-3,500. If this one is all good, it’s steal. Get it now.

Stunning Westley Richards Droplock Double Rifle, 300 Sherwood, Treasure Grade

Simon Clode, Chairman & Managing Director or Westley Richards, passed away this week. In honor of the man and company he worked so hard to keep at the forefront of British gunmaking, I’m going to dedicated a few posts to Westley Richards’ fabulous guns.

To start, let’s leap back in time and check out this jaw-dropping, “Treasure Grade” Westley Richards droplock double rifle in 300 Sherwood. Made in 1912, it’s 100+ years old and still in stunning original condition.

Westley Richards’ brilliant Anson & Deeley design …

Many of you know Simon Clode,  the Chairman & Managing Director of Westley Richards, passed away last week. In tribute to him, I’m putting up a series of posts dedicated to his great company.

Today’s, we’re covering one of Westley Richard’s huge contributions to the world of double barrel shotguns: The Anson & Deeley action. Patented in 1875, the A & D action was simple, rugged and easy to build. It was also revolutionary and one of the first successful “hammerless” shotgun designs created.

A: Hammer, shown forward in “fired” postion

C: Cocking level, tips hammer into position when bbls drop

D: The spring with hold the trigger sear (E) in place.

E: Trigger sear, releases hammer when trigger is pulled

In the late 19th and into the 20th century, it was the basis for thousands of side-by-sides made throughout the UK and across Europe. After WW2, it even found its way to Japan, where it was used by companies like Miroku and the Sakaba (SKB) Arms.

Today, a handful of companies still make true Anson & Deeley boxlocks: Westley Richards (of course) a few British and European firms, and Connecticut Shotgun (see their oddly named “Christian Hunter“).

Westley Richards’ interesting ejector system …

Here’s the next post in my continuing tribute to Westley Richards’ former Chairman & Managin Director Simon Clode.

I have mixed feeling about ejectors. Part of me appreciates them. Ejectors can satisfy. If you think of breaking a clay or downing a bird as a sentence, hitting your target is the verb and the shells kicking free of the chambers is the exclamation point.

Deeley sxs shotgun ejectors, contained in their "box"

Deeley sxs shotgun ejectors, contained in their “box”

But another part of me thinks ejectors just complicate things and eventually break. Some designs are unreliable, and a lot of them make it a pain to pull unshot shells from the chambers. On top of this, ejectors are absolutely unnecessary for all of shooting I, and most of us, do.

Back in the 19th century, ejectors  were brand new. While not revolutionary, they were evolutionary and a sign of how the newest shotgun designs were adapting to the newest shooting craze: driven game.

In 1885, Westley Richards patented their Deeley ejectors (nine years after their Anson & Deeley hammerless shotgun).  Self contained in a kind of box and complex, it was difficult to make. But it was also easy to install as a completed unit. This led many makers to buy finished ejectors units and install them on their own SxSs.

In this video, you can see just how complex Deeley ejectors are.

Westley Richard’s most important invention…

Evolution of Westley Richard's doll's head & toplever. Earliest at top. From The Explora.

Evolution of Westley Richard’s doll’s head & toplever. Earliest at top. From The Explora.

So far in my tributes to Simon Clode, the former Chairman & Managing Director of Westley Richards, I’ve mentioned two of his company’s most important contributions to side by sides: The Anson & Deeley boxlock action and the Deeley ejectors. Now it’s time for WR’s third and most significant.

If you ever shot a SxS or an O/U, you’ve used it. And while it was revolutionary in its day, it’s so common and obvious now I doubt you’ve ever wondered where it came from.

So what is it? It’s the toplever.

Back in the 1850s, shotguns were moving from muzzleloaders to designs that broke open to be loaded from the breach. Lefaucheux’s pinfire was shown at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851. By the end of that decade, other makers had designs for these doubles.

Westley Richards’ version featured a doll’s head and came out in 1858. To make it function, the company patented its first style toplever the following year. This toplever reached all the way down to the nose on the stock. In the years that followed, WR cut it back to the shorter size we’re familiar with today.

Evolution of Westley Richard's doll's head & toplever. Earliest on left. From The Explora.

Evolution of Westley Richard’s doll’s head & toplever. Earliest on left. From The Explora.

Around same time WR introduced its design, other gunsmiths and gunmakers were introducing their inventions: The Jones Underlever, the Purdey thumbhole, the Daw lever. But time showed they were all two-legged stools compared to the top lever. Once Purdey patented its sliding bolt and W & C Scott came up with it’s spindle, the toplever was able to operate them and introduce a design which has been used on tens of thousands of OUs and SxS since.

F.E. Malin Victoria Deluxe SxS Sidelock Shotgun ~ 20 Ga. ~ Two Barrel Set

F.E. Malin Victoria Deluxe SxS Sidelock Shotgun ~ 20 Ga. ~ Two Barrel Set

The gun trade, like all trades, has always had its rogues. From gunmakers like H.J. Hussey to gunshops like New England Arms in Kittery Point, Maine.

From what I’ve heard, Frank Malin was another of these rogues. A Brit who set up a gunmaking business in Canada, Malin, and the guns his guys built, have been the subject of all kinds of rumors. You can read some of them here. Regarding his guns, I’ve seen a few of them out there, including one which sold for $$8,625 back in 2006.

F.E. Malin Victoria Deluxe SxS Sidelock Shotgun ~ 20 Ga. ~ Two Barrel Set

F.E. Malin Victoria Deluxe SxS Sidelock Shotgun ~ 20 Ga. ~ Two Barrel Set

In my opinion, the Malin side-by-side below looks more Spanish than British. That being said, the metal work, blueing, color-case harding, and stock are all very well done (the stock looks awesome, actually). If the entire guns checks out and is sound, it’s a great deal.

BTW: The folks at Cabela’s failed to mention that this shogun features a Holland & Holland-style self-opening system. You can clearly see the plungers in the pics of the barrels.

Big & beautiful. E. M. Reilly 4 gauge SxS Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun

Big & beautiful. E. M. Reilly 4 gauge SxS Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun

If you collect big bore, waterfowling shotguns, or want to start, you’re in luck: Two of finest you’ll ever find are coming up in James D. Julia’s April, 2017, auction. In their day, big bores like these were far too expensive to be used by commercial hunters as “market guns.”

Instead, they were bought by well-off sportsmen and used to pass shoot ducks, geese and even swans. From what I’ve read, as hunting pressure along the Eastern flyways increased,  waterfowl became warier (and scarcer). To bring them down, hunters needed guns that could reach out further. With their big loads and heavy charges, big bores were able to do this.

Big & beautiful. E. M. Reilly 4 gauge SxS Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun

A monstrous & fabulous E.M. Reilly 4 gauge Side-by-Side hammer shotgun. I’ve had this double in my hands, and it’s incredible. To help it resist corrosion, it was nickel-plated and it features no engraving. It was probably made in England in the 1870s, and it remains in incredible — and to my eye — all original condition. Interestingly, it has stalking safeties on it – a feature normally reserved for hammer rifles.

An awesome 8 gauge L.C, Smith Quality 2. Stunning original condition.

An L.C. Smith 8 gauge Quality No. 2 Side-by-Side hammerless shotgun. I’m pretty sure this shotgun popped up on the market a few years ago. If it’s the same gun, it’s in incredible original condition and pretty much new. L.C. Smith probably made fewer than 50 eight gauges. This one has to be the finest one in existence. The Quality No. 2 was L.C. Smith’s lower middle grade. The company built them from 1890-1914 and made 12,483 total. Of those, just 38 were 8 gauges.

Gamba 12 gauge 580 SxS Double Barrel Sidelock Shotgun

Gamba 12 gauge 580 SxS Double Barrel Sidelock Shotgun

For most “stuff,” quality and cost rarely connect 1:1 and balance out. Some things, like antique Colt pistols or Jaquar XKEs, cost far more their quality should merit.  Other items, like this Gamba 580 shotgun, tip the other way. They offer more quality than you usually find at their price.

Renato Gamba is one of Italy’s oldest gunmakers. From what I’ve been able to find online, the 580 was one of their upper middle-grade SxS shotguns. It may have been built with some kind of Gamba-patented coil-spring locks, and the two screws in the bottom of the action (unusual for a sidelock) make me think it’s using some other Gamba-only designs. Regardless of what’s going inside the action, the outside of the gun is a clear indication of how well it’s made.

Gamba 12 gauge 580 SxS Double Barrel Sidelock Shotgun

Gamba 12 gauge 580 SxS Double Barrel Sidelock Shotgun

Filed up nicely and with a bit of flair, it has good metal-to-metal and nice details like set-screws. The stock’s well done, too. While the wood is a plain, it’s nicely shape and properly grained.

On top of all this, the scroll engraving is nicely done. Again, it’s not the greatest. But it is better than the scroll engraving on some Spanish guns costing 2x to 3x more.

Arrieta - Model 557 - Churchill Style Matched Pair 20g Sidelock SxS Shotguns

Arrieta – Model 557 – Churchill Style Matched Pair 20g Sidelock SxS Shotguns

Following the theme of this morning’s post, here’s are two more guns long on quality and short on price. They’re a pair of 20g Arrietas built with Churchill-style 25″ barrels & narrow ribs. They feature genuine hand detachable sidelocks, ejectors, decent engraving and even well cut drop points. At $5500, they’re a steal.

Short-barreled shotguns have always been around, and at times, they’ve caught on as fads. Francotte exported a lot of doubles with 26″ bbls to the U.S. at the end of the 19th century. They were marketed as “brush guns”.

Robert Churchill introduced his famous XXV shotguns with 25″ barrels around the time of the first World War and they were popular for decades. These guns are built on Robert Churchill’s principles. Like their British counterparts, I’m sure they’re very lively, dynamic doubles, perfect for grouse and woodcock hunting.

D.M. Lefever & Sons Grade 8E SxS Shotgun (12 Bore)

D.M. Lefever & Sons Grade 8E SxS Shotgun (12 Bore)

Daniel Myron Lefever was one of the geniuses of American gunmaking. Judging by the number of partnerships and businesses he formed in his career, he must have been mercurial, too.

From 1857 to his death in 1906, he worked for himself, and with others. By himself and with others, he built all sorts of firearms–including the one you see here. It comes from DM’s final venture: The D. M. Lefever, Sons & Company, which he formed with his sons in 1902.

Morphy Auctions is auctioning of this double tomorrow. If you like it, get on it now.

D.M. Lefever & Sons Grade 8E SxS Shotgun (12 Bore)

D.M. Lefever & Sons Grade 8E SxS Shotgun (12 Bore): This early high quality Lefever was built using a scalloped boxlock, Greener crossbolt. Barrels were made of Krupp fluid steel, not Damascus, and features a solid matted rib with twin beads. Double triggers, beautiful dark grain hand checkered English type rear sight with Monte Carlo comb, finely checkered side panels, owner’s plaque in stock, and an early Upland Game red waffle recoil pad. Stamped on bottom of frame “D.M. Lefever Sons & Company Pat’d 1902 Not connected with Lefever Arms Company”.

D.M. Lefever & Sons Grade 8E SxS Shotgun (12 Bore)

D.M. Lefever & Sons Grade 8E SxS Shotgun (12 Bore)

Bores are clean and shiny. Barrels retain approximately 70% original blue starting to thin and patina, with age freckling on the right barrel extending 10″ from breech. Forearm is finely checkered with ebony tip. The frame exhibits delicate scroll engraving with setter on right side and mallard on left. The wood is in beautiful condition, has been freshened up at one time, with a couple minor dings. Lock-up is perfect with no wiggle with forearm off. Trigger guard is basically gun metal grey. Nice traces of case colors on both sides of frame. Lovely old high grade Lefever.
